In 2004, stalwart fiscal conservative Pat Toomey came within an inch of defeating Arlen Specter in the GOP primary for Pennsylvania’s Class III Senate seat.

Specter went on to win the race by a commanding margin, even as GWB lost the state in the presidential election.

If Toomey had won the primary, could he have held the seat for the GOP?

I think Hoeffel wins a very close election.

Toomey tries again in 2010, and wins amidst the GOP wave.

Joe Hoeffel (D) 50%
Pat Toomey (R) 49%
Jim Clymer (Constitution) 0.5%
Betsy Summers (L) 0.5%
