You could say Italy has returned the 1930s without an ounce of hyperbole.

Not quite true yet, but we're definitely heading down the Hungarian path pretty fast.

That's not really the League's voter profile - it's not particularly a class party in any meaningful sense, and to the extent that it is (a very limited extent) the main leaning is towards what's maybe best termed lower middle class. Five Star is a different story o/c.

The whole "unfortunately" is a thing you should think, not say. We would all have gotten it from the context anyway. it's like the League have no clue how dog whistling works.

People only dogwhistle if they are not ready to meet the consequences that speaking their minds would bring. I don't think Salvini will suffer much from the consequences of his words here (though it might make the EU even more hostile to his plan).

I don't think we will see any great reaction, while it's unpleasant way to say it, it fully fall inside the EU treaties. No other Western EU country want to set up the precedence that you can't throw citizens from other EU countries out, if they are in the country "irregularly".

It's interesting that the quality of ethnic data in censuses was a good predictor of genocide efficiency among Nazi-occupied European countries.

James Scott discussed that issue a bit (and reproduced a census map of the Jewish population of Amsterdam) in Seeing Like A State o/c.

Isn't that one of the reasons France bans asking questions about race entirely?

Isn't the UK kind of unique (in the European context) in that it actually collects racial/ethnic data? (not religious though)

This is why we don't have a census anymore in the Netherlands.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  it's like the world is reverting to where it was in the 1930s. let's hope this doesn't continue though, because the eventual outcome is going to be worse than anyone would ever imagine, if fascists keep getting into power.

Wow, Italy is really going to give fascism another try?

Anyways, has Conte or Di Maio condemned the comments?

EDIT: PM Conte has condemned it and called it "unconstitutional" and discriminatory.

To be fair to Italian Fascism, I'm pretty sure ethnic cleansing was not its main calling card and platform plank, that propelled it to #1 in the polls (maybe that was class warfare).

How is this ethnic cleansing if they're only targeting non-citizens and leaving Roma who are citizens?
