He lived for 18 years with a pair of "well educated and speaking" magical cats that he appointed to his cabinet, who insisted on calling Fillmore "Mr. Norris." Denise, the female of the pair, was influential in the foreign policy decisions of his Presidency.

Is that true? I don't know what to make of it. Was he actually crazy?

This is a joke from a mock civics textbook produced by The Daily Show in the early aughts.

Interesting, my first guess was that it was from "The Remarkable Millard Fillmore: The Unbelievable Life of a Forgotten President"

I assume that it's based on less fanciful stories about Fillmore's actual cats and the animal protection advocacy that he was known for, at least in Western New York, later in his life. The true stories and contemporary rumors are amusing enough.

Very interesting, thank you for the link
