This was the only municipality in Los Angeles County to vote against Hillary both times in the primaries. A quick skim over Wikipedia indicates that it’s a resort community on Santa Catalina Island but with a median household income of $49,514, that seems somewhat impoverished per Los Angeles/California standards. Also, it’s a majority (55.77 percent) Hispanic/Latino community per 2010 U.S. Census numbers and this was a core constituency of Hillary’s 2008 campaign.

I'm curious to see what others (especially our Golden State avatars) have to say about this place.

Obama 08/Sanders 16 (Never Hillary)
*Avalon (O+ 2.23, S+ 11.81)
This place did vote for Hillary in the general by a ~12-point margin. Obama carried the place by ~15.5 points in 2012 over Romney and ~11 points in 2008 over McCain.

I vacationed there once when I was a kid. Very nice, if you don't get too seasick on the ferry over. Tongue

It's very small -- permanent population is less than 4,000 -- so it's harder to say definitively what happened than it might be in a larger community like Glendale or Burbank. My best guess is that the Latinos didn't really turn out, and the whiter/wealthier populations backed Obama and Sanders over Hillary, but I really have no idea.

It's a tiny place, and I expect turnout was low. It's the sort of community that attracts apolitical, vaguely misanthropic types with a similar mindset to places like rural New England or Hawaii's outer islands. One doesn't move to Catalina Island to change the world or build a career.
