Mexico Senate picks wife of president's business ally for Supreme Court
Quote
At the second time of asking, the Senate voted by an overwhelming majority to approve the nomination of Yasmin Esquivel, a Mexico City judge married to Jose Maria Rioboo, a construction magnate with close ties to Lopez Obrador.

After her ratification, Esquivel, who has rejected any suggestion that her relationship with Rioboo could compromise her integrity at the court, vowed to uphold the independence of the judiciary in serving her 15-year term.
Some things just don’t change with elections, I suppose. If she screws up, AMLO is going to get all the heat.

But so far AMLO's poll ratings are through the roof.  Latest Reforma poll has AMLO's approval rating at 78%.   I get it will go down but it seems he has a lot of political capital to play with.

Mexican president says to return 'stolen' wealth to the people
Quote
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Monday he will create a “Robin Hood” institute to return to the people the ill-gotten wealth seized from corrupt politicians and gangsters.

His administration is drawing up a bill to create an independent “Robin Hood” institute “against the corrupt” that would put confiscated goods such as real estate, jewelry and cars into the public’s hands, the president told reporters.

Health Service chief has resigned due to budget cuts
Quote
The head of Mexico’s social security institute has stepped down, citing budget cuts that he said would harm health services for the poor, in one of the first major resignations in the administration of leftist President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

German Martinez, head of the institute known as IMSS, issued his resignation in a letter on the government’s website on Tuesday. In it, he took a swipe at the finance ministry, blaming it for pressure on the IMSS to make savings and cut staff.

It should have been evident that AMLO was going to lead as a non-tipping populist, we all should have seen that coming but didn’t. Either way, his resignation signals that peeled off voters could be in play for the next general election.
