That's exactly it, Lewinsky.  He foolishly actually thought that'd hurt his chances.

Gore ran away from Clinton because he (Gore) thought voters cared more about Lewinsky than they actually did.

Depended on the state, I think.  Clinton campaigning for him probably wouldn't have helped in the South, but might have helped in, say, Ohio or New Hampshire.

Or he simply decided to take a moral stand against Clinton's behavior because he had three young daughters of his own and didn't want to see an employer of theirs behave in such a manner towards them.

Clinton was still quite popular, but Gore wanted to be his own man.

Despite the misconception, Clinton did campaign for Gore, but he was kept well under control by the Gore campaign, they basically told him what to say and where.

Gore thought that "soccer moms" cared about Lewinsky, when in reality it was just the religious right that cared.

Lewinsky + impeachment

But also :  Gore and Bill weren’t as friendly as people think. Apparently, Gore and Hillary had some standoffish encounters during the 8 years, as both Gore and Hillary sought power and influence in the White House. It was understood by those in the White House from 1993-2001 that Hillary actually outranked Gore, which naturally offended Gore

One revealing fact is that Gore was  willing to endorse Obama over Hillary in 2008. He didn’t do so because Obama never really needed the endorsement to win over Hillary, and Gore felt his endorsement would take attention away from Obama and towards Gore & Bill. But still - Gore told Obama that he would give his endorsement if Obama ran into unexpected trouble down the stretch of the 2008 primary against Hillary. He wouldn’t have done so if he and Bill were tight allies
