Remember, Democrats have been in office for twelve years in this scenario, so Republicans probably already have the advantage. It just depends on who they nominate. The right candidate would put the race out of reach, no matter who the Democrats nominate, especially if there's a recession. Meanwhile Democrats need a perfect candidate (probably either Kaine or Warren), to even stay competitive in the first place, and if we get a recession, Kaine can kiss his chances goodbye too...though it would probably not hurt Warren as much, given her populist "break up the banks" background.
