Personally I say HL. They don't produce great lighting, contain dangerous mercury, and I see no reason to use them over LEDs. But they remain in fairly wide use so I'm interested in what differing opinions there might be.

Did you know that the normal light bulbs have been forbidden in the EU since 2009?
Ever since people are forced to buy those mercury lamps. Of course, you can also buy LEDs, but you need the right sockets for them.

As to the CFLs themselves: Many are bothered about that light, but I actually like it; it may seems cooler, but they are also brighter. What I become exasperated with is the fact that there's missing a law that regulates the withdrawal of used CFL bulbs; in Germany every retailer who sells batteries has to take dead ones back due to their environmental toxins. However, dead mercury bulbs don't need to be taken back by the retailers who sold them. Red and angry

why?  They work fine in US light sockets.  Our house is full of them.

and that's why CFLs are HL, thankfully they were only the best option for a few years.  The out of the box failure rate was very high, for me at least.  I think we've had one bad LED (out of say, 20 and that was after a year of use) and it seemed like every 5th CFL was a dud out of the box or within a month of installation.
