Well, when that national service was designed to suppress political opposition, maintain an oppressive government, and undermine Western society - yes I can condemn him for that. If 25 years after the fall of Nazi Germany, an SS officer made it to power, should we not also condemn him for his national service?

Had the Reich survived for sixty-odd years (Putin joined in the late 1970’s, as I recall) to where they might be simple boiler plate intelligence-plus-domestic-repression type outfit (as opposed to the predumably novel SS) then yes, I might not blink at a German leader taking power in the 2010’s having done intelligence work. People will tolerate a lot in the name of serving their country. There are a million reasons not to trust Putin, but I don’t particularly care that he happens to have been a former spy handler. The squelching of independent media, the cornering of oil production by the state, the whole invasion of two sovereign countries, and so on are far more ominous than a career choice.
