Why is she plotting a comeback ? The conservatives are making a comeback in Latin America.

The Argentine economy is a mess, Macri is extremely unpopular, and she has a very real shot at winning. Also, it's not clear that we should extrapolate trends from two countries (Brazil and Chile) for the entire region, especially when the left showed surprising strength in Colombia, straight up won Mexico, mostly won in Costa Rica and Panama, and is in a solid position to hold Uruguay and Ecuador, and may win Argentina.

Cristina Kirchner will not run for President... but for Vice-President instead. Alberto Fernández, former chief of state of Néstor Kirchner, will run for President.

Wow. So bye-bye Macri.

Does anyone think that the abortion issue has a lot to do with the results, or is support for liberalization bipartisan enough to make this a seat-by-seat issue rather than a national one?

Anything you want it to be, really. I suppose you could describe it today as broad tent (personality-based) center-left to left-wing populism which retains protectionist, nationalist and corporatist views, but trying to accurately define Peronism is a futile exercise.

Yeah, I mean, the technical answer is that Peronism is a people-centered (and so fundamentally populistic) yet somewhat autocratic policy project centered around an economic system that emphasizes a robust and broadly redistributive role for the state. It's like a conservative Argentine socialism, and that itself is a paradox that makes Peronism so conceptually nebulous. Generally, though, it is highly suspicious of global economic systems and especially liberalism. It is also a kind of non-ideological ideology (again with the paradoxes), wanting to empower people without giving them power that doesn't belong to them (there's the conservatism).

Who knew BA was a bastion of right wingery? Don't tell the Porteños this, though.

Montevideo, by contrast, is a vote sink for the left in neighboring Uruguay. It's by far the most left wing part of the country.
