Its obvious had the Communists won that election Soviet troops would be in Italy within a year and no more elections. See Czechslovakia.

Unlike the coups against democratic governments this was the preservation of a democracy instead of a totalitarian regime. And attacking it is a bit hypocritical if one doesn't note this was literally "BOTH SIDES DO IT", the Soviets gave just as much aid to the Communists if not more

Probably also true, but can't blame them for not taking any chances. Remember that this is before polling was widespread and probably wasn't even a thing in Italy and they lacked all the other things we use today to track elections. It was the same year as Dewey Defeats Truman after all.

We went all out in Italy 1948, Russia 1996, and various other elections. South Vietnam was involved with our 1968 election, China with 1996, and probably Iran with 1980. Israel clearly wanted Romney to win in 2012. But Russia!
