RNC 2020

At the opening of the Republican Convention, the party seemed to be on death’s door. Trump was down by double digits. Democrats seemed poised to expand their majorities in both houses of Congress. But the party was united under Trump. Flake’s supporters had mostly jumped ship to the Kasich campaign, and any doubts that Trump was the leader of the GOP where rested when he crushed Flake’s insurgency.

The Republican convention passed with less fanfare than the DNC. Many of the Party’s “rising stars” had been snubbed out in 2018.  Many familiar faces were also nowhere to be seen. Neither Paul Ryan nor John Boehner made appearances. Mitt Romney, senator from Utah, took a pass at going to the convention. Even Senator Todd Young of Indiana, once thought to be an ally of the president, attended, but refused to speak, at the convention. In short, many Republicans were already bracing for a loss.

Many of the Republicans who did speak where staunch Trump Allies. Fmr. Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, Fmr. Congressman Ron DeSantis, Campaign Manager Kris Kobach, Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and a variety of others.

The RNC granted Trump a slight bump in the polls, but did little to help his overall chances of winning.

2020 Presidential Polling: Nationwide
MOE -- 4%
Bernie Sanders/Tulsi Gabbard -- 45% (-3%)
Donald Trump/Mike Pence* -- 35% (+4%)
John Kasich/Richard Hanna --9% (-2%)
Undecided/Others -- 11% (+1%)

Later than expected, but I took a bit of time to write ahead, so hopefully updates will come quicker. The timeline will end after the inauguration of the 2020 Election winner, so we are nearing the home stretch here.   There will be three more updates, Election Night, and then 3 or 4 post election night updates.

The Sanders’ Campaign issued a statement, saying that the Senator was unaware of these problems but a serious investigation would be launched. The Trump campaign issued a statement, claiming that this only furthers the point that Sanders is unfit to be president.

7:00PM

Blitzer: To those of you just tuning in, My name is Wolf Blitzer and you are watching CNN’s 2020 Election Night Coverage. Here at the top of the hour, CNN has a few projections to make.

First, the State of Indiana is Too Close to Call, but the President has taken an earlier lead there. Similar Situations in Kentucky, South Carolina, and Georgia, where the President also maintains an early lead.

The States of Florida and New Hampshire are too early to call, as polls remain open, however we are beginning to get results in from both states. Senator Sanders has taken a slight lead in the results we have from both states currently.

We can project that Senator Sanders will win in his home state of Vermont, not much of a surprise there.

Down Ballot, The Senate Races in Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, and South Carolina are too close to call, while the Senate Race in New Hampshire is too early to call. The Governor’s Races in Indiana and Vermont remain too Close to Call, while a number of house races across these states remain too close too call. We turn to John King to help make sense of these results, John?

King: So far, so good for the President, Wolfe. He’s leading in a lot of these states despite Governor Kasich’s relatively strong performance. He’s in a much weaker position than he was in 2016, but he’s still about where he needs to be to win.

Current Electoral Votes
Sen. Bernie Sanders/Rep. Tulsi Gabbard -- 3
Pres. Donald Trump/Vice Pres. Mike Pence -- 0
Fmr. Gov. John Kasich/Fmr. Rep. Richard Hanna -- 0
Uncalled -- 535

Current Senate Seats:
Democrats -- 40
Republicans -- 27
Independents -- 2
Uncalled -- 31

7:30PM

Blitzer: Here at 7:30, polls have closed in a few more states.

First, in West Virginia, we can project that President Donald Trump has won the state of West Virginia.  The states of Ohio and North Carolina are too close to call, with Senator Sanders leading in North Carolina and Governor Kasich leading in Ohio.

We can also project that the North Carolina Senate and Gubernatorial elections are too close to call, with Democrats leading both contests.

In the West Virginia Senate and Gubernatorial Elections, the results are too close to call, with Republicans leading both.

At this time, CNN can also project that Senator Sanders has taken a lead in Georgia.

Current Electoral Votes
Pres. Donald Trump/Vice Pres. Mike Pence -- 5
Sen. Bernie Sanders/Rep. Tulsi Gabbard -- 3
Fmr. Gov. John Kasich/Fmr. Rep. Richard Hanna -- 0
Uncalled -- 530

Current Senate Seats:
Democrats -- 40
Republicans -- 27
Independents -- 2
Uncalled -- 31

7:36PM

Blizter: … Hold on John, we have a major projection to make. At this time, CNN can now project that Mitch McConnell will win re-election over challenger Matt Jones. The first Senate call of the night, the Republican leader will win another term in the U.S. Senate. At this time, CNN can now project that Kentucky will go to President Donald Trump. An unsurprising call, but one that was critical for the President.

Current Electoral Votes
Pres. Donald Trump/Vice Pres. Mike Pence -- 13
Sen. Bernie Sanders/Rep. Tulsi Gabbard -- 3
Fmr. Gov. John Kasich/Fmr. Rep. Richard Hanna -- 0
Uncalled -- 522

Current Senate Seats:
Democrats -- 40
Republicans -- 28
Independents -- 2
Uncalled -- 30

7:47PM

Blitzer: We’re back, CNN now has another projection to make. Donald Trump will win Indiana, taking her 11 electoral votes. Again, not a surprising call, but it must be of relief to the Trump Camp.

Current Electoral Votes
Pres. Donald Trump/Vice Pres. Mike Pence -- 24
Sen. Bernie Sanders/Rep. Tulsi Gabbard -- 3
Fmr. Gov. John Kasich/Fmr. Rep. Richard Hanna -- 0

Current Senate Seats:
Democrats -- 40
Republicans -- 28
Independents -- 2

8:00PM

Blitzer: Here at the top of the hour,  CNN has several projections to make.

First, for the President, CNN can project that the President will carry the States of Alabama, Tennessee, and Oklahoma, a total of 27 electoral votes. For Senator Sanders, we can call Illinois, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, DC, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, for a total of 72 electoral votes. This brings Senator Sanders to 72 electoral votes, and President Trump up to 51 electoral votes. The states of Missouri, Mississippi, and Pennsylvania are too close to call, while the states of Texas, Kansas, and Michigan are too early to to call. Furthermore, Sanders has taken the lead in Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia, and Florida.

In the Senate Races, we can project that the Democratic incumbents in Delaware, New Jersey, and Rhode Island will win re-election. In Illinois and Massachusetts, Daniel Biss and Joe Kennedy will be elected to the U.S. Senate.  For the Republicans, Todd Lamb and Marsha Blackburn will win the open seats in Oklahoma and Tennessee. The States of Texas, Kansas, and Michigan are too early to call, while the states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Maine are too close to call. Alabama is considered the Republican’s best shot to pick up a seat, while Maine is one of the best shots at a Democratic pickup. Both seats are tightly fought races.

In the Gubernatorial contests, Missouri’s race between Democrat Clint Zweifel and Republican Josh Hawley is too close to call. Democrats have taken the lead in Vermont and New Hampshire races.

Current Electoral Votes
Sen. Bernie Sanders/Rep. Tulsi Gabbard -- 75
Pres. Donald Trump/Vice Pres. Mike Pence -- 51
Fmr. Gov. John Kasich/Fmr. Rep. Richard Hanna -- 0

Current Senate Seats:
Democrats -- 45
Republicans -- 30
Independents -- 2
Uncalled -- 23

8:16PM

Blitzer: “Sorry to cut you off Jake, but CNN has a projection to make. President Trump has carried the state of South Carolina, and Mr. John Warren has won the open senate seat in that state. “

Current Electoral Votes
Sen. Bernie Sanders/Rep. Tulsi Gabbard -- 75
Pres. Donald Trump/Vice Pres. Mike Pence --60
Fmr. Gov. John Kasich/Fmr. Rep. Richard Hanna -- 0

Current Senate Seats:
Democrats -- 45
Republicans -- 31
Independents -- 2
[/color]

8:23PM
Blitzer: “Hold John, CNN has a new projection to make.

In the State of West Virginia, incumbent Shelley Moore Capito will win re-election. A tougher than expected challenge, but she will prevail in the end.”

Tapper: “A huge win there for the Republicans, for a while it looked Capito was in danger of of losing, and a lot of Democrats put money into the race, but it really wasn’t enough. She’s on track to win by 5 or 6 points, maybe even more.”

Current Senate Seats:
Democrats -- 45
Republicans -- 32
Independents -- 2
