Wow, Ige leading 51-44% with 78% reported. Looks like he edges the challenge from Hanabusa out.

EDIT: New York Times has just declared Gov. David Ige the winner of the Democratic primary.

He seemed to have run a very impressive campaign. Nice!

Wow again, Democrats heavily outnumber Republicans in total ballots cast. It's almost 10-1.

It's Hawaii. Just as it was in Alabama 60-70 years ago even Indies and Republicans vote in Democratic primary here.

This is Hawaii though, where conservatives vote in the Democratic primary since the general election is almost never competitive.

Hanabusa just can't catch a break. I'm sorry to say, but she should have just been content with her House seat.

Why "sorry"? What about her makes her continued inability to attain statewide office worthy of sympathy?

I just don't want to come across as condescending.

I wonder if Hanabusa will primary Case in 2020...

Also funny that Ige's win came almost entirely from his margin off the island of Honolulu...where the first district is.

The unusual primaries for independent candidates for Governor and Lt. Governor were close.

LOL, I wasn't aware of that. They have five state representatives out of 51 though.

If they lose all 5, how many years will it have been since one party was shut out anywhere entirely?

No need to be a Republican in Hawaii. Just join the Democrats like DINO Mercado Kim, Conservadem Case, Tulsi Assad, etc.

The Democrats forget to field candidates against two of them (both in Obama-Clinton districts).

I've always thought it's interesting how the partisan composition in Hawaii on each island runs so closely together. In terms of the share of primary ballots that were Democratic, the 4 islands were individually between 87% (Oahu) and 90% (Kauai); Hawaii and Maui were 89%.

The 2012 presidential was probably the biggest gap recently; Oahu was 69% and the other 3 counties were 74%. In 2016, they ranged between 61-64%.

Any stats for Molokai and Lanai? They're part of Maui (not counting the former leper colony).

The independent primary was competitive. Independent nominee Terrence Teruya only won Honolulu County. Teruya received 52.4% in Honolulu County.

Independent primary results:
Terrence Teruya: 47.8%
Selina Blackwell: 43.6%
Link El: 8.6%
