Norbert Hofer, Austrian Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, is deeply saddened by the collapse and offers to send help and experts to Italy:

I saw it on the news earlier this day. The images are horrible since this is not a small bridge. My good wishes go out to the families of the victims and our Italian friends. Hope the injured get well soon.

Yes seriously, it was due to Italian politicians feeding their own pockets while saying that fiscal responsibility must be implemented.

That might well be part of the story, but Italy's woes run far deeper than that and it wouldn't have been too surprising to see a tragedy like that occur even without austerity.

It has been speculation that reason was five-star-movement who opposes everything, including new infrastructure investiments (also for enviromental basis).

Well, Salvini blames the European Union now because they demanded budget cuts in light of the financial crisis. It's true that the south European countries need more investments, but extremely low to use this tragety for his political purposes, fearmongering and EU bashing.

Just unhealthy populism. I have heard that he guy who opposed the idea is no more in the movement.

Not really, as the bridge upkeep had been privaticised.

As such this is a argument against privatization not austerity.
