Immediately before it was announced?

His short list was:

Pence
Christie
Gingrich

And like most people, I thought there was no way in hell it'd be Christie or Gingrich. Mike Pence was just the only somewhat normal person in the GOP willing to be on the ticket with Trump, so he got it by default.

Pence.

I also thought Clinton would pick Kaine.

The veepstakes in 2016 really weren't that interesting.

Even though Pence was on the shortlist, I still was surprised because he endorsed Cruz in the primaries.

I think I thought Gingrich, but Pence was absolutely the right pick in hindsight.

I'd forgotten that there was serious speculation of Corker.  He wasn't really a Never Trumper at the time.  But that would have been really interesting with hindsight.  On a semi-related note, I was still in college then and I will never forget that Corker came into a class I was taking on the election a couple weeks after the election and some really liberal girl got in a verbal argument with him about his support for Trump and that he called Ivanka Trump "attractive".
i think he is only a never trumper today because he is piss off he didnt became the vice president.

Pence, because I thought Gingrich and Christie were too tainted and his back handed endorsement of Cruz in the Indiana Primary always struck me as a gesture to Trump. Though during the primaries I thought it’d be Sessions.

LOL at imagining the alternate universe in which Sessions is the one person Trump couldn't fire.

what do you mean?

Both picks were very predictable.

It was interesting to watch Clinton make the Kaine pick, because her campaign selectively leaked that they were vetting Vilsack and Stavridis in an attempt to paint Kaine as the "liberal" choice.

Either Chris Christie, Newt Gingrich, Scott Brown, or Sarah Palin. In retrospect, Newt Gingrich might have been Trump's best choice.
