Zakharchenko always followed Kremlin orders I see no reason why they would remove him and unlike Plotnitsky he seemed to be quite popular in Donetsk.

Zakharchenko always followed Kremlin orders I see no reason why they would remove him and unlike Plotnitsky he seemed to be quite popular in Donetsk.
I expect his underlings are happy to have a chance to move up the ladder in the organizational chart, regardless of whether they had anything to do with it.

I doubt Putin really cares about Zakharchenko being "popular" or not. It's possible he saw his usefulness as over.
