Has it ever happened that a Democratic candidate (no matter for what office) has won a New York State primary while losing New York City?

43% of all New Yorkers live in NYC. Does anybody know the percentage of Democratic New Yorkers living in NYC? I assume the relative number is much higher.

Not exactly an example, but Kathleen Rice nearly won despite losing NYC in the 2010 AG race.

Even though it doesn't quite fulfil the requirements, that race is a good example, as it'd be interesting to see what would have happened if there had been a run-off.

Eric T. Schneiderman34.09%
Kathleen M. Rice31.81%
Sean Coffey16.50%

PS: I have never seen a red 20% hue on this site before. Tongue

The probably most ironic thing about Andrew Cuomo's primary victories four years and today is his strength in NYC and his weakness in Upstate NY, whereas his poppa won the other way round.
However, I'm not convinced that Mario Cuomo really lost NYC, as the article outlines:

"Mr. Cuomo won Staten Island and Manhattan and better than half of the city's assembly districts. Only last year, Mr. Koch had won renomination as Mayor by winning every district in the city."

It said he narrowly lost NYC.

Ah, okay. Sorry! It was the language barrier. I read it as if the Cuomo campaign team didn't want to waste money on NYC as the polls predicted a loss there and therefore concentrate on Upstate instead.
But it is still interesting that you can win the majority of NYC districts and still lose the whole of the city. What does better than half mean? Something like a little more than half?
