What Goldwater did part 1
In order to appeal to youth voters Barry Goldwater went on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in which he did a interview and a skit with Mr Carson which was a mock debate where Goldwater parodied himself while Johnny Carson parodied Douglas Dillon.

Dillon's « Endorsement » Ad airs in California, South Dakota, New Jersey and Illinois

The « Endorsement » ad features actor Clint Eastwood (who recently endorsed Dillon) reprising his role as Blondie in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and citing some of his famous quotes and explaining why he endorsed Dillon.

« Endorsement » advertising narration :

[The Good, the Bad and the Ugly's music theme starts playing]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AFa1-kciCb4

Clint Eastwood : Throughout the Johnson years, I've never seen so much money wasted so badly. And such wasteful government spending by LBJ and the Democrats running for office will bring our country into financial crisis through a drastic rise of the deficit. That's why I endorse C. Douglas Dillon because he's the one who's going to adopt fiscal responsibility by reducing government spending and keeping your taxes low like he did as Secretary of Treasury.

Actor disguised as a Ku Klux Klan member attempting to kill an African-American : I'll kill you!

Clint Eastwood (pointing his gun on the Ku Klux Klan member) : If you do that, you'll always be poor... just like the greasy rat that you are. Which is why I support Dillon for President because he is an unapologetic defender of Civil Rights for all Americans across this country, no matter your ethnicity, your beliefs or your origins.

Actor playing a Soviet military officer : You know, the Space Race is strategic enough to be worth $2000.

Clint Eastwood : Yeah, but you don't look like the one who'll collect it. Because with Dillon as President, we'll send men on the Moon next year and we'll men to Mars in the next decade. America will win the Space Race.

[The ad reprises the final scene during which Tuco attempts to shoot at Eastwood but couldn't as his gun was empty]

Clint Eastwood : You see, that's what happens when a nation is deprived of its military power as some of the presidential candidates in this race are suggesting deep cuts in defense budget, which will hand the Soviet Union the advantage in the Cold War. But this is also what happens when liberals deprive you of your Second Amendment rights. With C. Douglas Dillon as President, we will keep our military strong and support our troops here and abroad and we will overcome all the foreign policy challenges facing our country and we will win the Cold War. And he will defend your Second Amendment rights as well as your right to self-defense.

Clint Eastwood : So, my fellow Americans, the stakes are too high for you to stay home. On June 4, go to the polls and vote for C. Douglas Dillon for the sake of a stronger, safer and prosperous America.

Blacks for Goldwater campaign ad aired across the country

Hi im Willie McCovey or as you may know me as on the baseball field with the San Francisco Giants Stretch

Hi it’s me Willie Mays the Say hey kid. And we are here to tell you that we think that Barry Goldwater is the best candiate running for the Republican for African American people. Goldwater has admit his mistakes from the past and has  changed and became a candiate for our people.

McCovey:Throughout his campaign he has visited and supported anti Klan laws and wants to expose the Klan’s forces in Congress.

Mays:We fully believe Goldwater is the best for African American rights. We has held rallies for black Republicans and undecided black voters all over the country. So what I want you to do is if you want to defeat the clam vote for Goldwater and a Golden Amercia for all.

Kennedy '68

May 29-June 1: Kennedy campaigned in South Dakota these days, attempting to bring his pro-farmer platform out. He not only promised an increase in farm subsidies but once again highlighted his dual agriculture/foreign policy plan of using America's farms to help dismantle the Warsaw Pact, highlighting that this would not only bring a new market for American farmers, but also help in pulling countries away from Soviert influence.

June 2: RFK and his brother, as will as his wife Ethel and sister-in-law Jackie, campaigned in New Jersey on ending the war in Vietnam, as well as offering some rare praise for Johnson.

"The President has done some truly remarkable things on the domestic front. Unemployment is low, the economy is doing well and contrary to what Secretary Dillon says, many Americans, particularly those in unions, have a lot of purchasing power. He's laid the groundwork on the domestic front, but we need to go further."

June 3-4: These days were spent in California on the campaign trail all through the states. While Kennedy was on the trail, his primary surrogates; Connally, McCormack, Mansfield, Daley and Humphrey met with Democratic leaders in the remaining caucus states, pointing to the fact that if chaos erupted at the convention, it would be borderling impossible to defeat the Republicans, as well as the failure of anti-civil rights platforms outside of the south.

What Goldwater did part 2

Goldwater campaigned around the California area this time in Los Angeles where he talked about free enterprise and how he is the best candiate for African Americans.

He also went to see a Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants game on July 2nd with his family and campaign staff and campaigned around that area.

He also held Q&A’s around UCLA and USC for college voters

We need to nominate a conservative to lead this party to victory in November. When I became Governor of California, we fixed that state by reducing taxes for all Californians as well as the size of government, thus making California a state favorable for businesses, by defending your Second Amendment rights and by currently working hard to reform California's immigration system. What I did for California, C. Douglas Dillon will do for America. He will keep your taxes low like he did as Secretary of Treasury, protect the right to self-defense, fight for the advancement of civil rights and keep us safe through a strong military and strong alliances.

So California, go to the polls and vote for Dillon on June 4.

-Rally with voters in San Diego, California in response to RFK :

Senator Kennedy said recently that  the unemployment is low, the economy is doing well. Yes, that's right but that is mostly thanks to the tax cuts that your brother put in place and that I architected when I was Secretary of Treasury. Thanks to these tax cuts, the GDP expanded by an average of 5.5% from early 1961 to late 1963, inflation was down at around 1 %, the unemployment rate declined from 6.6 % to 5.6 % during Kennedy's two years in the White House, industrial production rose by 15 % and motor vehicle sales rose by 40 %. But unlike your brother, you want to raise taxes, which will make America a harder place to do business and offshore jobs elsewhere. That's why I will keep taxes low in order to get America to permanent prosperity and to full-employment thanks to the promotion of free enterprise.

Dillon's Victory Speech

Thank you, my friends. Thank you California, South Dakota, New Jersey, Wyoming, North Dakota,  Montana, Idaho and Nevada for this great night that moved us ahead in the delegate count.

We just learned that Senator Case dropped out of the race. I congratulate him for the strong and valiant campaign he led for America's cause. We are thankful for everything he has done for America. And I congratulate Senator Robert Francis Kennedy on winning the Democratic nomination and I intend to run a civil and decent campaign against him.

Now we must move on and we will work hard to win next week's primaries in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri in order to propel us to the nomination, to unify this party and to start the campaign for America's future.

Thank you. God bless you and God bless the United States of America.

Kennedy Victory Speech

"I have just received word that with our terrific performance, tonight, we have won the Democratic Party Nomination for President of the United States of America!

This was not a victory won by me. This was won by the people who gave so much to this campaign. People like Congresswoman Mink and Senators McCarthy and Smathers and Vice President Humphrey. People who fight for Civil Rights and labor rights!

We will bring an end to Vietnam. We will address civil rights. We will make sure that every citizen of this country has access to good healthcare, education and a decent minimum wage. We will break up the Soviet bloc through diplomacy, not force and will work towards reducing world tension.

Thank you and goodnight!

Senator Howard Baker Ends Silience, Endorses in 1968

Senator Howard Baker (R-TN): After seeing the Republican primary unfold I am stunned. We are a divided party, we are going into the general election season blind, we have no clear nominee as the Democrats are consolidating around Robert Kennedy. We need a Kennedy style candidacy on the Republican side that can inspire millions. I thought I would be that candidate but lack of funds prevented me from competing with the other candidates. Now, I must give my support to a candidate to win in the general election. That candidate is Barry Goldwater. Goldwater inspired millions in 1964 and inspired me to run in 1966 that surprised the country when I won the Tennesee senate election.

I urge my supporters to support Barry Goldwater in the nomination contest. This is because I have anything wrong with Mr. Dillion, I truly don't know him well. This is because I believe Goldwater can inspire America and the Republican like Kennedy are doing for the Democrats which is why I urge Dillion to suspend his campaign and for the Republicans to unite behind Goldwater once again.

Let's remember we are stronger when united not when we are divided.

Turn XI

June 5th-11th

Final Primary in Illinois

After six long months of battling, the state of Illinois will hold the last Primary while the States of Iowa and Missouri will hold their final Nationwide caucuses, with the territories holding their own caucuses at the Convention, thus marking the endgame for both parties.

Case drops out; Endorses No One; Dillion and Goldwater last men standing

Following the June 4th Primaries and the loss of his home state, Senator Clifford P. Case of New Jersey has dropped out of the Presidential race and has endorsed no one, stating he is waiting to see who is the best choice out of the remaining two candidates. Meanwhile, Senator Baker as broken his silence and endorsed Former Senator Goldwater, ensuring that Baker's Delegates will go to Goldwater after the First Ballot. However, with the Republican Primary now just between Dillion and Goldwater, all attention is on who will win the final three states as the winner of those states could possibly have the momentum to win the Nomination on the Second Ballot. Until then, however, both candidates will be fighting to see who is the strongest among themselves.

Senator Kennedy clinches Nomination; Senator Gore to refuse to drop out, "I'll drop out once all votes have been casted"; Kennedy to announce Running Mate soon.

On June 4th, Senator Kennedy handily won the Democratic Nomination, thus securing himself the victory on the first Ballot at the Convention in August. However, Senator Gore has stated that he won't drop out until all the votes have been cast, even the remaining territories at the convention, though he has cngratulated Senator Kennedy on winning said Nomination and has said that this is to make sure his supporters aren't forced to vote for Kennedy in the remaining primaries and Caucuses. Meanwhile, Senator Kennedy has leaked a Vice Presidential Shortlist including the following Candidates :

  • Governor John Connally of Texas
  • Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana
  • Senator George Smathers of Florida
  • Senator Frank Church of Idaho
  • Governor Dan Moore of North Carolina
  • Senator Fred Harris of Oklahoma
  • Senator Ed Muskie of Maine
  • Senator George McGovern of South Dakota
  • Secretary of State Dean Rusk
  • Ambassador to the United Nations Arthur Goldberg

After a long look at the leaked shortlist, Pundits have narrowed down Kennedy's potential Running Mate to be Governor Connally or Senators McGovern or Muskie. The New York Senator is expected to announce who he has picked any day now.

Johnson announces Independent Bid; Nelson Rockefeller to be his running mate/Wallace drops out

Staying true to his promise of going Independent in the case of Senator Kennedy winning the Democratic Nomination and Senator Case not getting the Republican Nomination, President Johnson has announced that he is running as an Independent against both the Repubicans and Democrats, choosing New York Governor and former Case Endorser Nelson Rockefeller as his running mate after dumping Hubert Humphrey from the ticket.

"It's clear that both parties have been taken over by extremists." Johnson said during his announcement. "For the Republicans, you have a Conservative from the Jack Kennedy Administration and someone that I defeated four years ago as the remaining candidates and they will seek to undo all I have done. For the Democrats, you see the brother of the dead President getting the Nomination and brining about the chance to risk everything just for his own ego. These choices this election are the worst to ever exist and thus, I am announcing my bid as an Independent Third Party to give voters the choice of someone who will continue true progress in this country."

"My Party has been taken over by Conservatives and Kennedy...Kennedy is a fraud. That's why I agreed to run with Johnson." Said Rockefeller, who is a friend of President Johnson, upon being asked why he joined the Independent Ticket.

In the same time, Governor Wallace has dropped out, leaving only two already known candidates and one unknown one to face each other in the General.

James Earl Ray, assassin of Martin Luther King, arrested on June 8th; More news coming in soon

Republicans Nationally :

C. Douglas Dillion : 58 %
Barry Goldwater : 39 %

Following June 4th and Case's announcement that he would drop out, many of his former Supporters have flocked to Dillion, fearing Goldwater would lose to Kennedy easily in the General Election, giving Dillion a 19 % lead for the last of the Republican Primary. While Goldwater has no real chance of winning the Nomination outright, many agree that if he can convince several delegates before the convention to change who they support for the Second Ballot, he could get the Nomination a second, consecutive time at the Convention, and he has a big chance to win in Iowa, though not in Missouri or Illinois.

Kennedy announces running mate

Dallas, June 5, 1968

It's was nearly 5 years ago when my brother was brutally gunned down in this city. And every day, I miss him. Every single day, I miss him. Jack, I know you're looking down on us now. I hope I can make you proud in November, and I hope I don't let you down.

That death, as all deaths in a family do, weighed deeply on my family. Our parents, his wife Jackie, our brother Ted . . . Needless to say, we were all numbed by his death.

But there was another man who was wounded in that heinous murder. A man that the people of this great state know and love. A man who has fought for this state in education and has organised the HemisFair '68. His skills are undeniable; his popularity in this state even more so.

Ladies and gentlemen, I want to introduce you to the next Vice President of the United States of America, your governor,
John Connally!

Governor John Connally Accepts Vice-Presidency Nomination

Governor John Connally (D-TX): I would like to thank Senator Kennedy for this great honor. Kennedy has been a uniting force in America especially after the brutal murder of his brother. We needed Senator Kennedy in 1963 to unite this country and we need him again in 1968. This year has been full of division and death, we cannot allow a leader that lives off that division to be elected. We need to elect a leader that will bring us into 1970, united behind the United States of America as we got through this rough time.

LBJ has done his best at keeping this nation together and I have stood by him as he tried to do that but I beg him not to jump into this race. I have been your campaign manager, I have worked for you and I still call you a friend but it is time for this nation to get a new leader with new values and new ideas to fix the problems plaguing our nation. That is why I endorsed Senator Kennedy and am joining him on the ticket to bring America into the 1970s.

Many of Senator Kennedy's key idea in his campaign was implemented here in Texas and have been large successes. One of Senator Kennedy key points in his campaign is to bring equal oppuritnuty to America in higher education, which is something I have fought strongly for in Texas and needs to be pushed across this country. Under my tenure as Governor, we forced A&M to start accepting female students so everybody has a chance at higher education and so everybody has a chance to pursue their own American dream. I have also pushed for more civil rights for minorities under my tenure which is why I continually did very well with ethnic minorities in elections which is something I hope to bring to the Kennedy campaign.

Kennedy/Connally '68

June 5: Robert F Kennedy, now the Presumptive Democratic Nominee, travelled to Texas to introduce his running mate for 1968, Texas Governor John Connally. The two, accompanied by their wives Nellie and Ethel, then headed to the Texas governor's mansion for a social lunch, after which they began to dscuss the strategy for the campaign.

June 6-8: RFK spent these two days with leaders of the NAACP and AFL-CIO who had recently endorsed him for President, attempting to rally support from African-Americans and the working class. He continued to tout his strong support for civil rights and pro-worker policies, all the while remaining fiercely anti-Communist.

June 9-11: Kennedy headed to Michigan and Ohio these days, discussing policies with the workers of both states. Furthermore, Kennedy also highlighted his foreign policy experience, labelling his experience on ExComm as a strong point, as well explaining that he had been opposed to escalating Vietnam for a while. He also stated that if talks could be started with the Soviets, then he would make an attempt to implement arms control measurements for both countries.

June 12-15: Kennedy returned to New York for a day to meet with voters and campaign through the disadvantaged neighbourhoods of New York City as he made his way up into New England, where we would spend the next few days campaigning before returning to his home to properly celebrate his Presumptive Nominee status with Ethel and their children.

Goldwater went around Missouri to talk about the Gold Standard and how it will fix Amercia’s problems and called out the news media (Mostly the newspaper) for being bias for Douglas Dillion and called out his foreign policy as a “Puppet for the war machine”

Dillon's ? Leadership ? Ad airs in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri

In effort to question Goldwater's conservative credentials and to attract voters who selected the economy as the most important issue of this election, Dillon's campaign broadcasts an attack ad against Barry Goldwater on his opposition to the Kennedy tax cuts while highlighting Dillon's experience as Secretary of Treasury and his fiscal conservatism.

? Leadership ? advertising narration :

No wonder that C. Douglas Dillon is the only one of the remaining Republican presidential candidates who cut taxes. As Secretary of the Treasury, he architected the Kennedy tax cuts. He knows what it takes to grow the economy, to create jobs and to get America to prosperity. That's why as President, he will cut taxes for all Americans, including the middle class, in order to make America the best place to do business and to reinforce hard-working families purchasing power, thus encouraging job creation and getting our country to permanent prosperity and to full-employment.

C. Douglas Dillon, the leader with the leadership and experience we need in our next President for the sake of America's economic prosperity and for the promotion of opportunity for all Americans.

C. Douglas Dillon : I'm C. Douglas Dillon and I approve this message.

Goldwater campaign responses to Dillion ad
There goes Dillion again claming something He is not.

The tax cuts that Johnson passed were not long term growth and it ended up being covered up with all that spending and not just that on the massive milltary.   I fully believe that in order to have long term economic growth we must have not just a tax cut but spending cuts too.

Plus my economy plan doesn’t for just Wall Street but it actually works for Main Street too.

We need a economy and goverment size that goes back to the days of the Founding Fathers

Illinois Primary

Cronkite : "Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the coverage of the final coverage of the presidential primaries and caucuses before both National Conventions. While Senator Kennedy has already acquired the Democratic Nomination, Senator Gore remains in the race until every single vote is counted, which many applaud him for. For the Republicans, however, a different story emerges. Former Arizona Senator and the 1964 Nominee Barry Goldwater battles Former Secretary of Treasury C. Douglas Dillion of Massachusetts to see who will have the required momentum to gain the Nomination on the second ballot at the convention. It's currently 8 PM and we have a quick call. It seems that Senator Kennedy will easily win the Primary in Illinois for the Democrats and take home 100 of its 116 Delegates, Gore taking home the remaining 16. For the Republicans, it is Early and we will likely call it in 2 hours. Looks like Dillion is going for the Momentum here."

Turn XII

June 12th-August 4th

Republican Primary in Last Stride

After months of battling, the last of the State-wide Primaries and Caucuses have ended with all three going to C. Douglas Dillion, giving him the momentum needed to win the Nomination on the Second Ballot. Barry Goldwater, however, is not one to be underestimated as he still has a lot of support remaining and could be able to pick up a surprise win against his Dillion with the right strategy. Both Candidates have been invited to three Republican Debates. One on June 20th in San Angelo, Texas at Angelo State University to be moderated by Howard K. Smith, the second on July 17th in Pomona, California at Pomona College to be moderated by Walter Cronkite, and the Third and Last on August 1st in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at Fort Lauderdale City College to be hosted by Harry Reasoner.

Republican Candidates expected to choose Running Mates soon

Despite neither having won the Nomination as of yet, both Dillion and Goldwater are widely expected to announce who their running mate shall be before the Convention, with many agreeing that the choice that they both make could determine the potential of either candidate getting the nomination, as the choice could be an influential figure in the Republican Party itself.

Bobby/Connally : The Democratic Ticket

After days of debating, Senator Kennedy cut straight to the point with who he wanted to be his running mate, choosing Texas Governor John Connally, who was wounded in the assassination of the Senator's Presidential Brother. Many are expecting this ticket to have a large amount of success but with President Johnson running as an Independent, Texas may be out of reach for the New York Senator.

Johnson/Rockefeller : Liberalism at its finest!

At a campaign rally in Hartford, Connecticut, President Johnson dismissed Kennedy choosing Governor Connally as his running mate as just another way to show how desperate he is. Governor Rockefeller followed up by stating "Senator Kennedy won't win this election and even if he does, how can we not be sure that Connally will be Conservative and influence Kennedy's decisions? That isn't a risk worth taking." Just, they have been branded as the True Liberal ticket for the country and while President Johnson h=is taking hit after hit in the approval rating due to Vietnam, he still has a motivated base of Liberals who feel that Kennedy will be able to be easily manipulated by Governor Connally, making this Election a tight one so far.

March of the One Hundred Thousand in Brazil

Within the city of Rio de Janeiro, on June 26th, crowds have demonstrated against the Military Government ruling over the Country. It is widely expected to be heavily cracked down on by the Government very soon.

In Glenville, Ohio, Black Militants lead by Fred (Ahmed) Evans engaged in a fierce with police for five long days. After days of fighting, the militants finally were defeated, however the situation led to riots that no one has been able to quell, sadly. Fortunately, however, deaths and wounded are limited as the situation is maintained.

After advocating for the formation of a collation Government to end the war in Vietnam, Opposition Leader Trương Đình Dzu has been arrested and sentenced to Five Years of Hard Labor. This flagrant abuse of human rights and political suppression is expected to not be taken lightly by the Candidates of both fields.
