Of course, if you just care about feeling good in the moment, that shouldn't concern you, but don't be surprised if people hold you in low esteem as a result.

Well, if you're going to throw out a half-hearted 'apology' and then continue with no change to your behavior, that's probably true. A sincere apology followed by an actual effort to become a mature, thoughtful contributor to the game would likely change some minds in the long term; but even if it doesn't, you don't apologize to get something for yourself —you apologize because it's the right thing to do when you make a mistake.
