It was aimed at millions of decent, hardworking Americans whose social and religious views Hillary Clinton, personally, cannot abide.  It was aimed at far more than "extremists" and the "alt-right".

It was aimed at my wife and I, and millions like us.

Voting for Donald Trump was the easiest Republican vote I have cast in my life.  This is a former Democratic Party activist speaking; a person raised in a household of Democrats where Adlai Stevenson was my Mother's #1 FF.  Hillary made it easy.  I may well vote for Democrats in the future, but I'll NEVER vote for a Democrat I consider to be a Clintonite.  Period.

Would you vote for a Sanderite

Possibly for Bernie, less so for his minions.  And it would depend on what the choice was.

What would make you not want to vote for Bernie? Abortion? Gun control/immigration even though he's a little more moderate on those issues than say Cory Booker or Kamala Harris?

The behavior of "the Resistance" has been a real turn-off for me.  That being said, Bernie is at least coherent in his opposition to Trump, and he's not a free-trade globalist.  I do think Bernie has an affinity for real working people that is genuine, and he doesn't forget where he came from.

She said a portion of Trump's supporters were objectively bad people. That's simply stating a fact. In a way, it was magnanimous of her, because she was asking for compassion and engagement for the other portion of his supporters who were just dumb.

I'm not going to cheer it on because it helped Trump win the election. But I do think it was a deplorable comment and represents everything that's wrong with contemporary politics. I guess that puts me in the middle.

It was a really really dumb thing to say.  She's probably right, but there are some truths candidates shouldn't say.

A hopelessly tone-deaf gaffe, red meat for the Democrat base and pure poison for just about everyone else. If this were cleared by Clinton's people and not just an off-the-cuff remark, then she clearly chose her staff poorly.

FC. She spoke her mind and she was right, but it certainly wasn't politically beneficial.

It was quite a generous comment from Hillary. At least 80% of Trump supporters are deplorable.

A remarkably stupid comment for a woman who was supposed to be a professional politician. This is not about being truthful or not, because a politicians job isn't really to deliver hard truths about the electorate, it is to pander and flatter the electorate. Any comment like this is quickly perceived as a broad attack on a sector of the electorate; which is one thing for a moron like trump who can barely last three sentences without spewing unscripted verbal diarrhoea, quite another for someone like HRC.

Are a portion of her supporters objectively bad people?

Also, as for the OP, a hilariously stupid thing to say.

IMO she pretty obviously wins without it. Only one of many such moments, but a clear one certainly.

I didn't view it as a personal attack on me personally, but I do view it as an attack that revealed Clinton's real thoughts on lower class people. Of course, the Trump campaign milked it for all it was worth, like Obama and Romney's 47% comment.

I don't think a single person in this thread said it wasn't terrible politics. I argued earlier that it didn't have an impact on the results, which is not remotely the same thing. Trump attacking a dead Muslim soldier wasn't good politics either, but it didn't have an impact on the results.

Freedom comment because it probably cost Hillary the election Smiley

LOL, how absurd. You really think millions of Americans based their vote on this comment? It was already a distant memory by election day anyway.
Could've tipped the scales in WI, MI, and PA.

If it was enough to tip ~77,000 votes in those states combined, then you're talking hundreds of thousands of votes or potentially even millions of votes nationally. Does that past your smell test? Most people who were offended about it were already solid Trump supporters. And if the comment had that big of an impact, then Hillary wouldn't have had big leads in the polls from Access Hollywood (which was after basket of deplorables) until the Comey letter. In fact, it had barely budged her numbers at all, which were already in decline during that period of time for unrelated reasons. Even thinking it flipped Michigan alone is a stretch, because it would mean 11,000 individuals who wouldn't have otherwise voted for Trump did so solely because Hillary used the phrase "basket of deplorables" 2 months ago, which is silly. Especially when you account for how short the attention span of the average American is, much less the average "swing voter."

What it did is make some Trump supporters (including soft/leaning) more committed to defeating Hillary.  And if those people had some impact on people around them, it could have made a difference.

Horrible comment. I'm a socialist, but you don't call people who disagree with you simply terrible human beings. You never do that. People aren't entitled to your opinions, or the media. They have the right to have their own opinion, even if it differs with your opinion.
