Prime Minister "Tuusi" Motzfeldt tries to capitalize on a booming mining economy to ride to victory

After major economic success in expanding the Maamorilik mine, "Tuusi" hopes to win a solid majority with a platform of expanded, government owned and heavily regulated mining. However, the anti-mining movement has formed a party of their own, hoping to block expansion of the mines.

Community of the People (Inuit Ataqatigiit): Led by PM "Tuusi", the IA are running under a platform to try and appease both those with some concerns about the mining and those who believe the economy will further boom if the sector is expanded. They are running on keeping the vast majority of mining operations under Greenland Minerals and Mining, and enforcing strong environmental regulations on the sector. One solution proposed to ensure people's lives aren't strongly affected is to search for mineral deposits on the East coast of the island, although outside the massive Northeast Greenland National Park. They support all this to make greenland self-sufficient enough to gain independence.

Solidarity (Atassut): Led by Daniel Skifte, Atassut advocates for less regulated mining, an opposition to both the separatists and far-right unionists, striking a moderate unionist tone. They have moved slightly to the center since the Unity Party broke off, but still are considered center-right.

Unity Party: Still led by Otto Steinholdt, Unity has branded itself as the "true unionist party, not wanting to foster any independence-related ambitions." They advocate for minimal mining regulations, including dismantling Greenland Minerals and Mining, as well as the possibility of mining in Northeast Greenland National Park. They say the funds would go to lowering taxes "across the realm". They still espouse fiery far-right rhetoric on social issues, especially on Greenlandic language rights. They also recently changed their party color to bronze, although this has become a point to poke fun at recently by some left wingers.

Forward (Siumut): With Jonathan Motzfeldt still at the helm, Siumut believes mining should be slightly expanded over time, in time with their "10 year independence plan". They also have liberal views on social issues.

Polar Party (Issittup Partiia): Still led by Nikolaj Heinrich, IP is in favor of less mining regulations for a self-sustaining Greenland, and believe that mining will be the key to Greenland's independence. They have conservative views on social issues, although they do defend Greenlandic Language rights.

Anti Mining Party / The Greens: This party is running on one issue alone. Opposition to any mining expansion. They say it will damage the way of life in Greenland for many people. There are also some right wingers who believe the mining industry will bring in too many foreigners, although this is a very small section of the party. There is no current leader, as the party was formed extremely recently and have yet to elect a leader.

I'm starting to notice a pattern in my hypothetical greenlandic voting habits. Attasut because unionism. Though I would come close to voting for Siumut because of the good economy

I don't think I stated this in the main thread, but greenland's GDP back in the 80's was like 800 million. The mining here boosted it by nearly a third.

A close election ends with weeks of recounts and a narrow majority

Preliminary Results:
Inuit Ataqatgiit: 30.39%, 8 seats (-2)
Anti-Mining Party / The Greens: 17.35%, 5 seats (N/A)
Atassut: 17.32%, 5 seats (-5)
Union: 13.04%, 4 seats (+1)
Siumut: 13.01%, 3 seats (+1)
Issittup Partiia: 8.42%, 2 seats (+/- 0)
Independent: 0.47%, 0 seats

The first results of the 1988 election were hectic, to say the least. Although the IA had gained significant support, the A-M/Greens managed to take that away and then some, leaving the IA with only 8 seats. Atassut had lost half their seats, making moderate unionism seem to be falling out of favor with the average Greenlander. IP maintained their seat count, but the most contentious part of the election was the narrow margin between the Union and Siumut. Only a total of 9 votes separated them, and the only remaining seat (given in the preliminary results to the Union) was going to be decided between who would get 4th place. This seat would also be the decider as to whether the current government would be able to reach a majority or not. If the Union were to keep their one gain, government formation would be impossible, with the IA rejecting an alliance with Atassut, all parties rejecting an alliance with the Union, and only IA being (reluctantly) open to the Greens. Weeks of recounts would see the balance shift back and forth, but eventually the results were finalized.

Final Results:
Inuit Ataqatgiit: 30.38%, 8 seats (-2)
Anti-Mining Party / The Greens: 17.36%, 5 seats (N/A)
Atassut: 17.33%, 5 seats (-5)
Siumut: 13.05%, 4 seats (+2)
Union: 13.01%, 3 seats (+/- 0)
Issittup Partiia: 8.41%, 2 seats (+/- 0)
Independent: 0.46%, 0 seats

Otto Steinholdt would continue to contest the election results for nearly 2 months afterwards, but the IA-S-IP Government would manage to prevail with 51.84% of the votes and 14 seats.
