I've been wondering for quite a long time how Hillary Clinton was perceived in New York when she decided to run for Daniel Patrick Moynihan's open Senate seat.

Did her decision arouse the New Yorker's suspicion and derision? Or wasn't it a topic at all?
Were there rumors in circulation about a secret agreement between Clinton and Moynihan? Or had he decided long before not to run again?

Why didn't Clinton just wait two years in order to run for the Arkansas Senate seat? It was then being held by Republican Tim Hutchinson. In hindsight it would have been the better decision. Or wouldn't she have won?

she probably (correctly) assumed that she had a much better chance being a carpetbagger in NY than she did in her home state.

Two years is an eternity in politics and having hubby in the White House was bound help her out, especially in keeping other Democrats from running for the seat she chose to take.

She would have had zero chance of being elected to the Senate from Arkansas in 2000.  They didn't have a Senate race that year.  Nor did her original home State of Illinois.  The open seats in 2000 were Florida, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, and New York.

Do you think Mark Pryor would have relinquished the Senate seat, which had been held by his daddy, to Hillary in 2002?
Or would there have been a fierce and dirty primary battle?

What I think is that if Hillary was going to get in the Senate she needed to run in 2000, no matter where that was.

But was she welcomed in New York, or did the New Yorkers and the local media gossip viciously about her decision?

Moynihan was 73 in 2000, and was tied for being the longest serving Senator in NY.  He'd been in government, with some breaks, since 1961. He ended a long and brilliant career, where people eventually ended up agreeing with him at the end, on some key issues.  He had been compared by Bob Dole to Daniel Webster.

No one ever thought of ant secret deal.

As for being a carpetbagger, NY had that tradition.  RFK did it in 1964.

But did the media and especially the satirical magazines make fun of Hillary's decision to run for the New Yorker Senate seat?

Not that much. Cheney joked about the "man from Hope" going back home to New York.

T^here were jokes about Hillary running, but not running from NY.

Just looking at the title, I thought you were referring to Varina Davis, Jefferson Davis's widow.

After Davis's death, Varina Davis moved to New York City, of all places.

I finally, finally found a spot-on spoof about Hillary running in New York that is even predicting the future accurately. 🤗

So, is there an opposite of carpetbagger?
