I think we can all agree on the fact that Joe Lieberman was definitely the wrong choice for Vice President for Al Gore.
What if he had adopted his master's presidential campaign policy and chose a Southern U.S. senator (= him) and a Southern governor for the Democratic Party Ticket?
1998 and 1999 were great election years for Southern governors, thus he would have had a wide choice.

(Gaston Caperton wasn't an incumbent governor anymore at that time, but I wanted to include a West Virginian governor, plus I think he would have served a third term if he hadn't been term-limited.)

Was Gore losing West Virginia actually a huge upset back then?

Gore didn't need another Southerner ..he was already three Electoral Votes away from winning.

If I were him, I would've picked Jeanne Shaheen, who was Governor of New Hampshire, a state Gore also did not carry in 2000 (IRL).

New Hampshire was close enough that Shaheen being on the ticket probably would've flipped the state, and given Gore the election.

I know that in hindsight a New Hampshire office holder or Bob Graham would have been brilliant choices. I just wanted to make up a scenario where Gore emulates Clinton's formula for success: one Southern Governor + one Southern Senator. (Let's be real here: Clinton wouldn't have won Tennessee, Kentucky and Georgia without Gore on the ticket.)
But I agree with you: I ought to have listed Bob Graham as an option.

This. Imo Gore should have picked Graham as his running mate.

Agreed.  But of the choices given, I'd have gone with Jim Hunt.

Caperton, because the other states are unwinnable, Lieberman provided ideological  balance, he was not terrible, I mean G Bush would have done better if he picked Tom Ridge, but he needed someone Washington smart. For Gore, the Lieberman pick moved the ticket in a moderate direction and somewhat quieted attacks about Gore’s ties to Clinton
