Like his fellow Republican senator Ted Cruz in 2018, Senate Minority Whip John Cornyn could face a tough or competitive reelection in 2020, a presidential year, in a state where Democrats finally believe they can turn purple (battleground state politically) or even blue because of the changing demographics.

Which Texas Democrat can beat or make the election competitive against Sen. John Cornyn?

Why does everyone bring up Julian Castro? No one remembers him in TX. He left to be HUD Secretary a long time ago and hasn't held office since.

Joaquin probably wants to just wait and build seniority in the House...he could very well end up in leadership someday. There'll always have to be a safe Democratic, Hispanic-majority seat in San Antonio.

EDIT: Also, no one's beating Cornyn in 2020. He's not going to have the nice, easy run he had in 2014, though. Cornyn's not winning by 27 again.

If a really stellar candidate can't beat easily the less popular of Texas' two senators in a Dem-friendly midterm year, I really doubt that its going to be all that competitive in 2020, especially as Dems have way better targets.

Why not contest Texas? We don't know what the 2020 landscape will look like and actually Cornyn doesn't have great favorables. It would be good wave insurance for a landslide dem victory. I'd say it would start as Likely R but it's worth looking into.
TX, GA, MT, NC, AZ, IA, CO, ME are the senate races we should contest imo

I sort of doubt anyone can win - Cornyn is not Cruz - but the best candidate would probably be Beto again.

There are more than a few candidates who have ran for statewide office (not necessarily in TX) and lost the first time, but then won the second time they run. Although it would be tougher to beat Cornyn other things being equal, Beto would have an easier time with Presidential-level turnout, so those two factors might roughly balance each other out.

The biggest advantage is he would already have high name ID, and could start fundraising and keep his campaign infrastructure more or less intact. With another 2 years of well-funded buildup, his field campaign could be formidable.

Either Castro brother, Beto'O Rourke...however Cornyn's more likely to lose a primary.

What basis is there that they are not good candidates?  Have they ever lost an election (well I think Julian lost his 1st bid for Mayor at a really young age... but won the next go round).  Just because they have not run for a statewide office yet- does not mean they are not good candidates.  Only time will tell if they are good candidates or not (when either runs for an office outside of their congressional district).

Who else is there? Wendy Davis? Bill White? Other random municipal/state legislature pols?

It makes sense for people to focus on the Castros, and I think Julian Castro might be the best bet because he has name recognition, and isn't going to have to leave a office to run. Essentially, there is no harm in running him. TX Dems can't keep falling back on paper candidates who are just there to fill space.

I think we'd have to see 1. How is Beto going to perform this year, and 2. Is Trump losing in a big enough landslide that TX might be in danger? If so, then you can see if a Dem has a chance to unseat Cornyn, but ATM I think it's highly unlikely.

At this point, unclear. The number of points Cruz wins by will tell dems whether contesting this race is worth it or not.
