FF-but as other alluded to, when the Jews, the Anabaptists, the Papists, didn't see the wonders of what Luther had laid out for them and all convert, he got medieval on their asses.  While his diatribes against the Jews near the end of his life are the most famous thanks to the Nazis resurrecting them for their own purposes Luther was pretty much angry at everyone (and it is possible that dementia was setting in at the end of his life too).

Obviously, looking back at him with a "2018 perspective," we are going to find a lot of things we don't like.  However, at the end of the day, my rating is obvious:

As a real roman&reactionary Catholic (preVaticanII) i nontheless admit, that the early LUTHER was theologically very right. But He was (like J.RATZINGER) a naive worldless german professor, who was exploited and abused by the rulers (finally especially by the emerging bourgeoisie), perverted into the contrary: Abandoning celibacy, the monasteries, the sacraments is nothing else than pure pelagianism, an awful atheism of the mediocre rats in the cities, demasked by KIERKEGAARD and NIETZSCHE.

(Remark: Concerning parties&elections or the weather i have opinions - in philosophical&theological issues i haven't.)

Well, according to Wikipedia, Luther's Jew hating pamphlet wasn't published between 1612 and when the Nazi's resurrected him, so it wasn't like it was part of the German Bible all those years in between

Luther's antisemitism was what it was and has to be factored into how we view him, but the 'From Luther to Hitler' thesis has been entirely discredited longer than all but a handful of posters here have been alive.

After reading his biography, it’s very difficult not to have an extremely mixed opinion about him.

The Catholic Church at the time was obviously corrupt, so it made sense to break away from it.
However his theology is not good for a lot of reasons, so as much as I hate to refer to him as "horrible"
I voted hp.

Today Catholicism, with all its faults is better than Protestantism. One reason that this is true is that
Catholics don't officially believe in "faith alone" and also Catholics tend to be more pro-science.
Also Catholics are supposed to be pacifist.

These are sweeping generalizations and, of course, "all generalizations are false".
The statement "all generalizations are false" is also a generalization.

Within Protestantism, the Anabaptist tradition is one of the best.

Also Luther got rid of some of the books of the Bible, which is problematic.

FF as he loosened the Churches sway on politics in the Christian world. His followers wars and interpretations lead to secularism taking hold in the areas of Northwestern Europe and America.

FF for standing up to bad theology and trying to reform the Church, HP for leading to the deaths of countless people and irreversibly fracturing Christianity.

Martin Luther isn't responsible for people bastardizing his good reform ideas any more than the authors of the Gospels are for the Crusades.
