The real, undeniable conclusion is that the wealthy and elite have always been pulling the strings, the U.S. government has always thrown aside impoverished people for the gain of the former, and the "police state" and hostility towards foreigners and immigrants have been prescient for much longer than the administration of the current honcho. His election only brought it out into the raw, unfiltered, uncomfortable open so that people who'd previously shelved it in the back of their memory and conscience have been forced to confront it, while those who've never cared or secretly/openly longed for it in the first place now cheer it on with more voracity and excitement than ever.

Socialists have never held true power in the United States, and the only two members of Congress directly affiliated with the Socialist Party in the early-mid 20th century were eventually ganged-up on by both wings of the bird and defeated for re-election. Conservative hysteria about socialist control is a direct result of decades upon decades of amassed, brutally effective propaganda on the part of elite interests.

That is actually pretty well written. Touche.

It's all very well written.  Doesn't make me warm up to socialism anymore, though.

This is one of the generational divides in the US at present. Among generations older than the Millennials memory of the USSR as the archfoe of the US colors the meaning of Socialist. For 40 years the fear of nuclear war was real and only associated with the USSR, so being labeled a socialist was being labeled a sympathizer with the enemy. But even the oldest Millennials were just entering school when the Berlin Wall came down foreshadowing the end of the USSR, so they have no context growing up with the fear of socialism.

True but I am a millennials/gen Z and I know the USSR was an evil empire, I think most people my age know socialism is stupid. It's just a vocal minority (mostly made up of people living in their moms basement) who think socialism is a good idea.

Even one of my roommates who is on the left thinks socialism is a dumb idea because it's pretty clearly a system that punishes people for being successful. Anyone who thinks rationally and not purely ideologically can see the implications of that, which includes those on the non-socialist left.
