Kissinger had wanted Ford to run. Ford thought Reagan couldn't beat Carter, but he only publicly stated that he would back the eventual nominee.

Pretty sure Nixon and Ford were for Bush...he had served in their administration(s). And neither was known to be a fan of Reagan.

Nixon was an ‘informal campaign advisor’ to John Connally during the 1980 primaries.

Nixon was an ‘informal campaign advisor’ to John Connally during the 1980 primaries.

This makes perfectly sense. Nixon actually wanted Connally for vice president in 1973. He only picked Ford because he was the easiest to get through congress without much controversy in a time when Nixon's political capital was already consumed by Watergate.

I have little doubt that Ford was for Bush.  Once the idea of Ford being Reagan's VP nominee fell apart, Ford strongly made it known to Reagan that he would be best served by picking George Bush.
