Heitkamp says she worked with a victims' advocate, who gave the campaign a list of names to be used in the ad, thinking they had all consented to have their names be used. This was most likely entirely unintentional on Heitkamp's part. If so, it should not reflect on her or her fitness to be in the Senate.

Yeah but it's still a huge gaffe and it's North Dakota.

This will have virtually no effect on the election.

They hold their state’s politicians to a much higher standard than national ones.

They also hold Dems to a higher standard because people need a reason to vote for one and will find any reason not to.  They’ll tell you “it’s because we’re a conservative Republican state”.

Yeah, remember all the whataboutery regarding Al Franken, Bill Clinton, etc. from Roy Moore supporters? Now remember that North Dakota voted for Trump by 40 points. They'll find justifications for still voting for a Republican no matter what scandals they're hit with. Meanwhile, the second a Democrat makes even a minor flub, they are Satan incarnate and are condemned as not worthy of public office with righteous indignation.

Voters dont hold politicians to any standards period. Majority of voters defer to their social identity/demographic and are totally ignorant of any issue or scandal of the day. Its the job of party leadership to hold politicians to standards since voters simply take their cues from their party leaders.

I support Heitkamp's re-election, mainly because I hate political polarization, but this is just lame. The "metoo" movement will fizzle out soon because of people turning everything into something that revolves around sexual harassment. 10 years ago, calling a woman hot would have been considered a flirty complement to call a woman sexy or attractive, but now it is considered sexual harassment. Now we have reached the point where it is accustom to accuse politicians of sexual harassment. All of this from a thread of wealthy privileged women on twitter fighting for the trophy of most victimized.

The metoo movement has done it's toll on society, and definitely done it's toll on politics. Heidi hopefully recovers from this, and if she loses she'll learn her lesson.

Sadly, you are both right. And that's why Cramer being a complete douchebag about sexual assault victims not being so-called tough Prairie women will probably win and be aided in doing such by this gaffe. A g a f f e which, incidentally, I believe heitkamp when she claims she was led to believe these women had consented to have their names used. I mean come on. If she didn't think that then she, or any politician at the level of Village mayor up, would know this would be not just shooting oneself in the foot, but blowing one's entire leg off with a shotgun.
