If I had to take a complete shot in the dark, probably due to being seen as immoral or whatever. Gambling is one of the major vices.

Not sure the when, but as for the why I've seen the argument put forth around the internet that it was banned in order to prevent games from being fixed.

When:1992 and it was overturned last year.
Why:because the govt has to ruin everything fun to "protect" us and there aren't enough lovers of liberty in this country to stop it.

We have two main problem areas of gambling in Australia.

1. Mobile phone sports betting by young men.

2. One armed bandits in pubs.

Both should be banned.

Professional sports leagues have opposed gambling on sports, due to the potential corruption of athletes by gambling interests.

The 1919 World Series was thrown by the Black Sox, (eight White Sox players who conspired to throw the Series for money).  Before that, baseball was awash in gamblers and ganbling problems.   The NFL has always been cautious; how easily could a game be thrown by bribing a ref?  College hoops has a long history of point shaving.  The bans on sports betting are fully justified.
