My dad became a Republican around 2003, so this is his voting history. He grew up low-middle class but we transitioned into high-middle class around this time, so maybe that explains it? I'm not so sure.

I think this a fairly common voter...I know one in fact. There were a lot of ancestral Democrats (particularly in the South) who probably voted Democratic up to 2000, but switched to Republican as cultural issues became so prominent in the 2000s.

White working-class or lower-middle class ancestral Democrat somewhere in the mid-South or Appalachia.

Alternatively, a lower-middle class white "ethnic" voter in Long Island or New Jersey who voted for Bush in 2004 because this voter was personally impacted by 9/11 and thought Bush was stronger on national security and counter-terrorism in 2004 and was even more attracted to noted military man and iconic war hero John McCain in 2008 - and frankly, didn't really like the idea of a black President.

A voter who doubted Bush's competence on foreign policy in 2000, but then became terrified of terrorism after 9/11.

TN guy who liked Gore because he knows him well due to Gore serving his state for some time. After Gore decided not to run, the TN guy decides he's had enough of Democrats and Gore was just an exception.

Some moderate dude from TN or AR. Gore came close in these states, but Dems never gained much ground afterwards in presidential contests.

A moderate who's hawkish on foreign policy. Remember, Bush campaigned in 2000 as a non-interventionist, outright stating opposition to "nation-building" in a debate with Gore.

There are a ton of Gore/Bush/McCain counties in AR, TN, KY, AL and GA.

This was a very common trajectory for a pretty significant part of the electorate.

Southern ancestral Democrats who finally made the switch sometime between the 2000 & 2004 presidential elections.

WWC dems in the Outer South who supported Gore (perhaps largely due to him being a favourite son) but abandoned the Democratic party due to increasing emphasis on social/cultural issues or coal.
