High speed rail strikes me as one of those things that will spread to a lot of developing nations in the future, with Chinese technology and politicians eager to have their names attached to big projects. I'm not entirely convinced they're a worthy investment though (in the developing or developed world). Strikes me more of an attempt at projecting power than an actual infrastructural necessity.
