Mike Dunleavy Was already sworn in? Why? Why is the governor of Alaska sworn in so early?

I don't see a problem here:

Once the election results are official and certified, the new Governor can be sworn in at any time.

Does anyone know when gubernatorial terms exactly expire and begin? At midnight or at noon? Is that even defined by law? We all know that presidential terms begin and end at 12 a.m. EST.

Should also be noted that Andrew Cuomo will be sworn in for his third term on January 1.

So, Republicans are technically at their all-time (or at least in modern times) high number of governorships right now (tied with the period between Justice switching parties and Murphy being inaugurated in NJ), right?

They have a shorter lame-duck period. Hawaii also has a fairly short lame-duck period.

This is an interesting thread. I think most states have a specified day (first Monday in January) while a few have specified dates and times (in Michigan it’s New Year’s Day at noon).

Yes, ideally elected officials should be sworn in 2-3 days after election results are certified.

Agreed, it prevents the inherently anti-democratic action in lame-duck sessions seen in places like WI, MI, NC

Some people were joking about it on Twitter, but I didn't realize it was actually a school gym.

Muriel Bowser was sworn in for her second term as Mayor of the District of Columbia on Wednesday.

I’ll let others argue whether this is within the scope of this thread.

Janet Mills has officially been sworn in as the 75th Governor of Maine.

The nightmare that is Paul LePage is finally over... hopefully.

That rendition of "Girl on Fire" by those two immigrant girls was incredible.
