Yes, a sitting liberal Democratic Congressman actually said this:

Quote
"We're not going to blow it this time. Just shut up, gays, women, environmentalists. Just shut up. You'll get everything you want after the election. But just, for the meantime, shut up so that we can win. There's a real strong feeling that we don't want to start trouble. Nobody wants to take the rap for messing this up." ~ Rep. Peter Kostmayer (D-PA), 1988

It doesn't get more honest than this, does it?  Of course, the Democrats DID blow it, in part because they were out-sleazed by Lee Atwater, but in part because they just couldn't resist their impulses to lecture America on liberal virtues that many of them had rejected over time, some for foolish reasons, some for reasons that were quite reasonable.

Would Hillary and Company been better off if they had applied more of this principle to their 2016 campaign?  After all, Donald Trump couldn't keep this advice if his life depended on it.

Hillary was unable to formulate a message, and had no choice but to run on identity politics. She should have adopted Bernie's platform, specifically for universal healthcare after the primaries. I'm not sure her giving up identity politics would have changed much, she still had nothing to run on except being the not Trump.

Silly advice. At least half of Democratic voters are from minority groups (race, religion, gender, sexual orientation) and ignoring them is stupid. These groups all have certain issues that are incredibly important to them and less so to the general public.

It would be like Republicans ignoring social conservatives and Evangelicals.
