Yes, a sitting liberal Democratic Congressman actually said this:

It doesn't get more honest than this, does it?  Of course, the Democrats DID blow it, in part because they were out-sleazed by Lee Atwater, but in part because they just couldn't resist their impulses to lecture America on liberal virtues that many of them had rejected over time, some for foolish reasons, some for reasons that were quite reasonable.

Would Hillary and Company been better off if they had applied more of this principle to their 2016 campaign?  After all, Donald Trump couldn't keep this advice if his life depended on it.
