The 2020 United States Census, known as Census 2020, will be the twenty-fourth United States Census. National Census Day, the reference day used for the census, will be April 1, 2020.

As required by the United States Constitution, the U.S. Census has been conducted every 10 years since 1790. The 2010 United States Census was the previous census completed.

Participation in the U.S. Census is required by law in Title 13 of the United States Code. As per the 72-year rule, personally identifiable information is scheduled to become available in 2082.

In the 2010 Census, the population of the United States was counted as 308,745,538 - a 9.7% increase from the 2000 Census.

Census Bureau To Test How Controversial Citizenship Question Affects Responses

Next year, the U.S. Census Bureau is planning to launch its first-ever field test of a 2020 census form that includes the controversial citizenship question added by the Trump administration. The bureau wants to know how that question may affect responses to the upcoming national head count, the agency announced Thursday.

Beginning in June 2019, about 480,000 households are expected to receive one of two test questionnaires similar to the form the bureau is planning to use in 2020. Some of the forms used in the test will include the question, "Is this person a citizen of the United States?"

The bureau expects to receive results by fall 2019. That's just months before the head count is expected to begin in January 2020 in rural Alaska before rolling out to the rest of the country starting in March of that year. Officials say they are trying to figure out whether the agency needs to hire more door knockers to visit households that don't respond and adapt its marketing campaign for the census because of any negative impact from the citizenship question.

"We're doing this purely for logistical purposes," explained the bureau's Acting Director Ron Jarmin during a public meeting of the Census Scientific Advisory Committee.

The announcement comes at a precarious period in preparations for the constitutionally-required head count of every person living in the U.S. The Trump administration is facing a total of seven lawsuits over its addition of a citizenship question that dozens of states, cities and other groups fear will undermine the accuracy of the information collected for the census.

The population count will be used to determine the distribution of congressional seats and Electoral College votes among the states through 2030, and how an estimated $800 billion a year in federal funds are allocated for Medicare, local schools, roads and other public institutions and services.

If I were a US citizen, I would of course take part in the 2020 Census - as it is a civic duty.

Everything else would just help Trump and the Republicans.

I think this thread should also be stickied, because it will become important next year.

I have probably posted this already somewhere, but the US Census operation is really expensive:

The 2020 Census (a traditional one with door-knocking, because the lack of a population register) will cost about 20 billion $

This compares to 5-10 million € for the 2021 Austrian register-based census, where the census data is drawn from several registers, such as the Central Population Register (CPR), housing and school, welfare, tax, car, etc. registers. No person here is any longer bothered by census-takers or by filling out forms that you need to send back. You only register once at your town, or you register your baby just once or when you move into the country or out of it.

The US could and should also introduce such a system, the money saved would be immense.

Aside from the citizenship question (which will be decided in the 1st half of 2019 by the Supreme Court), I'm interested in this question:

This will be the first Census with the online component, where people can fill out their Census form via the internet. But as the Rhode Island Census test has shown, about 70-75% of Americans will fill out their forms online, meaning that out of 332 million Americans, at least 230 million forms/entries will be submitted online.

In roughly a week or two or so ! Remember when several million Americans signed up for Obamacare insurance plans and the database broke down because of the demand ? And those were only several million entries at the same time. Now we are talking about 230 million entries at the same time !

This could be like Atlas Forum on election nights, on a much bigger scale and could turn into a huge disaster if the servers don't work properly over the 2 or so entry weeks.

BTW:

The Census Bureau, part of the Commerce Ministry, is closed right now because of the US government shutdown and their website is not updated any longer.

This is really bad for the 2020 Census operation, especially if the shutdown continues for another few months.

I'm not sure if any work is done, but I understand that some people still work there (just without pay). So, I guess, they are not really motivated to work without being paid ... Tongue

The Trump administration has just decided to fast-track the Citizenship question and send it directly to the Supreme Court. A ruling has to come by June, because the Census forms will be printed then.

The Census Bureau has released the results of the comprehensive 2020 Census Barriers, Attitudes and Motivators Study (CBAMS), which is the base study for their upcoming advertising and awareness campaign:

The chart pretty much shows that Democrats are shooting themselves in the knee with their obstruction to the citizenship question.

If they would encourage their key constituents (minorities, recently-arrived citizens and young people) to take part in the Census, it would help them in the long run. Right now, as you can see in the chart, young people are the least likely to take part in the Census.

The Supreme Court has yet to allow the Trump administration to bypass the lower courts the many times they have asked. Don't see why they would start here.

Because timing is critical: the Census forms need to be printed in June, so there's no time to throw it back to the lower courts and drag out a decision.
