The Trump administration has just decided to fast-track the Citizenship question and send it directly to the Supreme Court. A ruling has to come by June, because the Census forms will be printed then.

The Supreme Court has yet to allow the Trump administration to bypass the lower courts the many times they have asked. Don't see why they would start here.

NYT article came out. Seems conservative judges are united on this issue. Looking like the undemocratic and disgustingly racist citizenship question will be on the census after all. Yuck.

Non-citizens are not a „race“. Adding the question is legitimate of course.

Even though the process and procedures that they took to add the question was literally against the laws put in place by Congress, but that's okay because it was a Republican administration that did it.

Ugh. The Democrats are done if the citizenship question is allowed to stand.

Yup, because the next will be states choosing to redistrict based on the number of citizens rather than people. There is not much they can do about the distribution of congressional seats as the Constitution literally says people, then again this court shows it doesn't care as long as it helps Republicans. However, there is nothing that says that internal redistricting has to be done by people.

This is just another reason why it's time to pack the courts. It's already an illegitimate institution with a stolen Justice and two rapists.

I think the affects are being overblown by many, although I still disagree about having the question on there.

The problem is going to be the next step.

It's less about the effect it will have in the actual counting process (imo) than what will happen with the data after. Republicans in some states have made it fairly obvious they wish to draw legislative districts using citizens only, or possibly even eligible voters only, which would be insane, given that children/teenagers would be excluded even though they are citizens and will be eligible voters - some within mere year(s).

That being said, regardless of this case, Democrats have to do everything in their power to make sure people fully fill out the census.

Another idea would be to just have everyone boycott the citizenship question, but answer the rest.

There will certainly be no delay in the ruling just because some MD judge is pissed off.

The SC will rule today, tomorrow or next week already because census forms have to be printed in early July.

This isn't just "some MD judge," this is the judge that originally heard the case.

He's one of 5 or so judges who dealt with random census whining cases ...

The SC should not (and very likely will not) consider this whining and go ahead with their ruling.

No need to jeopardize the census operation with a delayed ruling (as I have said, the census forms need to be printed).

It looks pretty compelling that the decision will be delayed due to the Hofeller evidence.

The 4th Circuit Court is getting involved now.

It is possible that ruling is that they push it back down to the lower courts.

Which will be hard to do now that there is clear evidence of racist intent.

It's going to be extremely difficult to get a valid explanation in and then add in the question considering it's already June 27th and the deadline is June 30th...

The actual deadline is 10/31 though

Gonna be hard to come up with a valid reason now that there is written evidence that shows racist intent.

It's pretty funny that basically every other country in the world asks for citizenship in its census but this is seen is as a right wing issue in America, shows how far to the left America is on some issues.

There is literally written evidence that the intent for adding the citizenship question is racist. We get all the data that we need on citizenship from the mass survey that goes out in the 5's years.

Wow, Trump's a real clown.

"Delay" the Census ? The Constitution clearly says "must be held every 10 years".

Plus Federal law says it must start by April.

Both the Commerce Department and DOJ have said there won't be the census question, but Trump's rant is actually causing emergency court hearings right now:
