Cheney picks Condi Rice or Bill Frist as a VP and then resigns after they are confirmed. They serve the rest of the term and don't run for re-election.

1. That would not be an "accident".

2. Bush is dumb, but going "hunting" with your Vice President, who is clearly power hungry, is a whole new level of stupidity.

3. If this scenario did occur, Cheney wouldn't survive a week. Between being indicted for murdering the President, and his own poor health, I'd give him six days (maybe not even long enough to nominate and confirm his own Vice President), before his heart gives out. Given this is before the Midterm Elections of 2006, we'd probably have Dennis Hastert as President (or Pelosi if Cheney defies the odds and lasts until after the midterms while under a murder indictment).

You'd have to be really unlucky to die from birdshot at that range.  But yeah, the clear result of Cheney shooting Dubya would be that we'd get a new Vice President appointed by either Dubya or Cheney, and then if it were Cheney doing the appointment, he'd resign after a new Vice resident had been appointed.
