Livingston County was one of the few suburban counties that actually trended Republican in 2016. Romney won 61% of the vote, while Trump won 62%.

it’s more exurban, and it’s more on the wealthy side than educated compared to otherwise similar counties liks hunterdon nj, which has a very high number of college graduates. i think a v interesting question is why monmouth county swung to trump and trended republican

Monmouth is a strange place. Went for Gore in 2000 by a majority, yet hasn't voted for a Democrat since 2001 (McGreevey).

Probably due to Hurricane Sandy, also why Nassau County swung R.

Hurricane Sandy fallback. Even if NJ trended R in 2016 on paper in reality it is actually trending D despite my mock username.

that’s what i was thinking too, but it still swung R in 2012, and it has a really high number of college graduates like somerset, morris and bergen, yet behaves very differently. idk monmouth confuses me

Only Brighton and it's township trended D. Ultimately the county is from Michigan and was rural enough to outweigh Brighton.

Also semi-noteworthy that Green Oak CT just south of Brighton dropped their share of the two party vote entirely.

Livingston hasn't voted for a statewide Democrat since 1986, when Jim Blanchard won 82/83 counties and 68% of the vote in his re-election. Even in Carl Levin's final re-election in 2008, Livingston was one of only 6 counties to vote for his Republican opponent (albeit by only 544 votes).
