ÖVP-Greens 2.0 sworn in today in Vorarlberg.

Markus Wallner (3rd from left) was re-elected as Governor with 26/36 votes in the state parliament (ÖVP+Greens have 24 seats, so he got 2 additional votes from FPÖ, SPÖ or NEOS).

The new state government members (2x Greens on the left, 5x ÖVP on the right):

Today, „Krone“ and „Ö24“ newspapers speculated about possible cabinet posts in the coming Black-Green government, apparently based on some leaks coming out of the talks.

Depending on the final number of cabinet posts (between 12 and 18), the Greens will get between 3-5 ministries or posts (if there’s a state secretary again).

There’s probably a big re-shuffling of responsibilities coming: a super ministry for ecology, environmental protection, transport, traffic, infrastructure etc. could be created for the Greens.

Social/Labour would also go to the Greens, maybe even Defense.

The important Green mayor of Innsbruck, Willi, today demanded that the Greens get the Finance Ministry, but I guess the ÖVP will never give it to them ... (just like Interior).

The "Standard" speculates that the Greens will get Environment/Infrastructure, Social/Labour and Education/Integration + 1 state secretary. Nobody really wants the chronically underfunded Defense Department, so that could stay with the ÖVP (even though it is currently actually led by the Independent but Green-affiliated Thomas Starlinger).

All exploration talks have concluded.

K&K just delivered a few very vague statements to the press, confirming that the Greens will decide Sunday afternoon in a committee meeting if coalition talks will be started with the ÖVP.

Kurz whined around how easy it was 2 years ago with the FPÖ and how quick the coalition was formed („we were almost identical issue-wise“) and lamented that the FPÖ took itself out of consideration.

Kurz will talk with a lot of important ÖVP-people during the next few days and decide after the Greens on Monday or Tuesday what he will do.

A couple interesting new polls, as we are heading towards a final decision for intense ÖVP-Green coalition talks in the next days:

The new Ö24 poll shows a largely stable picture, with the ÖVP far ahead and the Greens slightly ahead of the FPÖ.

ÖVP-Greens is the preferred coalition now, with ÖVP-FPÖ falling further.

In another ATV poll, 55% of Austrians support the expected in-depth coalition talks of ÖVP-Greens either very strongly or somewhat. 36% are very or somewhat opposed to ÖVP-Green coalition talks, with 9% undecided.

96% (!) of Green-voters support coalition talks with the ÖVP, as do 79% of NEOS-voters and 68% of SPÖ-voters.

Now the ÖVP-voters: 61% support, 33% oppose.

Which means that a third of the ÖVP's current 37-38% would NOT support a coalition with the Greens. Experts think that these 12-13% are the more conservative/nationalist/anti-immigrant FPÖ loan voters that Kurz attracted over the past few years.

Therefore he has to be very, very careful in the coalition talks with the Greens so as to not make any concessions to them on immigration/asylum.

FPÖ-voters of course are opposed to ÖVP-Green talks with 71% (which is kinda low, but there are probably many FPÖ-voters who think Kurz should try and fail ...)

With 2 weeks until the Steiermark (Styria) state election, here's a "new" poll by IMAS for the "Kronen Zeitung":

It appeared today, but was already conducted between Oct. 16-29 and therefore before the Nazi songbook scandal of the FPÖ there ...

The ÖVP does a bit worse than in other polls and the SPÖ a bit better.

The poll also shows that the SPÖ's candidate is seen quite positively, unlike the party as a whole.

Austria's Greens open door to coalition talks with Kurz's Conservatives

Source: @Gruene_Austria

Quote
VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria’s Greens said on Sunday they are willing to enter formal coalition talks with former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s conservative party, opening the door to negotiations that could bring them into national government for the first time.

Nobody really knows. Everything is open. The talks could still fail as well. If not, there will be a lot of compromises, but the ÖVP will dominate and will make the Greens accept a continued hard line on immigration and asylum while granting them a few cosmetical changes on climate change and social topics (but nothing too radical of course).

ÖVP-Green coalition talks started today.

K&K announced the creation of 6 broad negotiation groups, led by the following people:

Source: APA/ORF.at

These 6 major groups will be divided into several sub-groups, which will involve a lot of party people from both sides, aides, experts etc.

Altogether, more than 50 people from each side will work out the details of the coalition contract in these groups.

For the first time, the future Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler appeared together today at a press statement:

Source: APA/Georg Hochmuth

Kogler said after the talks that "time is not that important", but "quality is". He doesn't mind if the "popular Bierlein interim government remains in office until after the Christmas holidays."

In other news, the state prosecution of Graz has set their sights on Herbert Kickl (FPÖ) and Wolfgang Zanger (also FPÖ).

The Graz state prosecutor wants to convict Kickl on incitement of hatred and wants to charge Zanger for violation of Austria's anti-Nazi law in the new Nazi songbook scandal.

As MPs, both are enjoying immunity from prosecution, but a majority vote there could revoke immunity for both of them so they could be charged in December.

There’s early voting tomorrow for the Styria state election next Sunday.

To promote this early voting possibility, the SPÖ has produced a funny ad:

„Grandma is doing an all-nighter, because she has already voted. Use your chance to vote too.“

Today’s early voting in Styria looked like a success, with good turnout.

Numbers are likely released tomorrow.

The Green and NEOS frontrunners used the possibility and voted early today.

I just tried looking up the early voting figures, but then realized that early voting ends at 9pm.

Which is in 5 minutes.

Very unusual, because on election days all precincts close at 5pm already ...

The official numbers say something else:

Only 40.000 people voted early yesterday, compared with 69.000 ahead of the 2015 state election.

ÖVP's parliamentary group leader August Wöginger has created a firestorm recently at a campaign speech in his Upper Austria.

He said to the crowd in a patriarchal manner:

Quote
"It cannot be that our children go to Vienna (to study etc.) and come back as Greens. If someone eats and sleeps in our homes, they have to vote ÖVP !"

Yesterday, Vienna:

August Wöginger holds a press conference with Leonore Gewessler from the Greens ... Tongue
