Austria's Greens open door to coalition talks with Kurz's Conservatives

Source: @Gruene_Austria

Quote
VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria’s Greens said on Sunday they are willing to enter formal coalition talks with former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz’s conservative party, opening the door to negotiations that could bring them into national government for the first time.

Nobody really knows. Everything is open. The talks could still fail as well. If not, there will be a lot of compromises, but the ÖVP will dominate and will make the Greens accept a continued hard line on immigration and asylum while granting them a few cosmetical changes on climate change and social topics (but nothing too radical of course).

ÖVP-Green coalition talks started today.

K&K announced the creation of 6 broad negotiation groups, led by the following people:

Source: APA/ORF.at

These 6 major groups will be divided into several sub-groups, which will involve a lot of party people from both sides, aides, experts etc.

Altogether, more than 50 people from each side will work out the details of the coalition contract in these groups.

For the first time, the future Chancellor Sebastian Kurz and Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler appeared together today at a press statement:

Kogler said after the talks that "time is not that important", but "quality is". He doesn't mind if the "popular Bierlein interim government remains in office until after the Christmas holidays."

In other news, the state prosecution of Graz has set their sights on Herbert Kickl (FPÖ) and Wolfgang Zanger (also FPÖ).

The Graz state prosecutor wants to convict Kickl on incitement of hatred and wants to charge Zanger for violation of Austria's anti-Nazi law in the new Nazi songbook scandal.

As MPs, both are enjoying immunity from prosecution, but a majority vote there could revoke immunity for both of them so they could be charged in December.

There’s early voting tomorrow for the Styria state election next Sunday.

To promote this early voting possibility, the SPÖ has produced a funny ad:

„Grandma is doing an all-nighter, because she has already voted. Use your chance to vote too.“

Today’s early voting in Styria looked like a success, with good turnout.

Numbers are likely released tomorrow.

The Green and NEOS frontrunners used the possibility and voted early today.

I just tried looking up the early voting figures, but then realized that early voting ends at 9pm.

Which is in 5 minutes.

Very unusual, because on election days all precincts close at 5pm already ...

The official numbers say something else:

Only 40.000 people voted early yesterday, compared with 69.000 ahead of the 2015 state election.

ÖVP's parliamentary group leader August Wöginger has created a firestorm recently at a campaign speech in his Upper Austria.

He said to the crowd in a patriarchal manner:

Quote
"It cannot be that our children go to Vienna (to study etc.) and come back as Greens. If someone eats and sleeps in our homes, they have to vote ÖVP !"

Yesterday, Vienna:

August Wöginger holds a press conference with Leonore Gewessler from the Greens ... Tongue

The Austrian Interior Ministry has filed a lawsuit against the chief editor of the major tabloid paper Ö24, Richard Schmitt:

https://kurier.at/politik/inland/innenministerium-zeigte-oe24at-chef-richard-schmitt-an/400676924

The lawsuit accuses Schmitt of "treasonous publication of state secrets" ...

Schmitt published a whistleblower article based on information from a mole inside Austria's intelligence service BVT (which in fact is a disaster of an organisation).

According to the article, the BVT was examined by the British intelligence service MI5 and the German one and they found deep flaws.

Independent Interior Minister Peschorn has now commissioned an external task force to find out what's really going on at the BVT ...

Franz Vranitzky, former Social Democratic Chancellor between 1986 and 1997, has spoken out in favour of letting all non-citizens vote in national elections.

https://www.krone.at/2044123

That's quite controversial, because the SPÖ is currently in a terrible shape and one could think the SPÖ only wants it to improve their polling numbers and election results ...

I guess it would be better for the SPÖ to instead evaluate why they are losing more and more votes from Austrian citizens.

As an example they could look at the work of the Styrian KPÖ, which is doing a much better job at connecting with low-income workers by providing them the support they need on affordable housing ("renting aid").

Besides, the modern SPÖ is seen as very elitist and detached from the average worker, with their politicians wearing expensive Rolex watches and driving around in 100K € Porsches, while the KPÖ politicians are donating most of their monthly salaries to people in need.

So a while back Tender asked for a coalition map between OVP-Greens and the rest. So, here it is. I rather like the Grey-Green I picked for the Govt. I get the peculiar feeling that this map is rather 'historical' in that the OVP and Greens pull from slightly similar upper-class demographics and the FPO and SPO pull from similar lower-class demographics. Now, there are going to be some exceptions like in Vienna, but when the opposition only has NEOS to buttress their support with upper income groups, this may just be an OVP/SPO map back from the old 2-party era.

If you want to see the map in it's full zoomed in glory, which I recommend, you can go here.

Thanks Oryx, a very cool map.

Pretty much what I thought it would look like and as you said, it's roughly what the historical ÖVP/SPÖ 2-party maps were like in the 1960s and 1970s, adjusting for the ÖVP-landslide in the election.

1 story, 3 more headaches for the SPÖ:

https://tirol.orf.at/stories/3022422

Turns out the SPÖ-leader of Tyrol, Dornauer, went to the Innsbruck airport (climate polluter !!!) with his 100.000€ Porsche (elitist !!!) and left his loaded hunting rifle on the backseat with one window open ... (reckless fool !!!).

LOL.

Someone in the airport parking garage noticed it and called the police, who confiscated the rifle while Dornauer was in Vienna.

They also filed a charge against him for violating the weapons law and revoked his gun license.

Dornauer went to social media today to apologize for the "terrible mistake" ... Tongue

The Styria state election on Sunday will be the first big test of the ÖVP-Green government, even though it is not even in charge yet.

But still:

With the prospect of the Greens in government, how will Kurzˋs loan voters from the FPÖ react now that he’s gone full green ?

Ca. 10% of the ÖVPs current 38% are quite „blue“ and only voted for Kurz because they were promised a continued hard line policy on immigration ...
