The male presidents' and male governors' wives are called First Ladies.
The female presidents' and female governors' husbands are called First Lads or First Gentlemen.
But what about the spouses of homosexual presidents and governors? What term does the Constitution intend for them?

I don't think, IIRC, that the term "First Lady" is in the Constitution at all. If it's a gay couple, I would assume that it would just be the First Gentleman, and, for a lesbian couple, First Lady.

Yeah, this. The term "first lady/gentleman" isn't a constitutional or legal term, it's just the unofficial title used for the spouses of the President & Governors. It's a social construct, & it didn't even come into common use 'til the late 1800s.

Interestingly, no presidential spouse was referred to as the "First Lady" until Lucy Hayes.

In fact, socially the term "First Lady" is never used.  It would be inappropriate to say
"President and First Lady Trump".  It would always be "President and Mrs. Trump".

Jennifer Siebel, the wife of Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), is called "first partner". For what reason ever.

Seems like needless newspeak to solve a nonexistent problem tbh. Marlon Reis is sitting right now in Colorado under the title "First Gentleman."

For good reason -I doubt the wife of the Vice-President would appreciate being called the 'Second Lady'.  Tongue
