Haig's "I'm in charge here" while Reagan was in surgery after the assassination attempt made a lot of people question his stability and judgment.  Minor by today's standards, but it was a different environment then.  And it wasn't his only faux pas.

The guy made Rumsfeld look like Dubya. He was a conniving, power-hungry son of a bitch, and that would've been obvious to every voter.
