Why was Haig so unpopular?

He was too right-wing for the Reagan administration. I think that says it all.

Haig's "I'm in charge here" while Reagan was in surgery after the assassination attempt made a lot of people question his stability and judgment. Minor by today's standards, but it was a different environment then. And it wasn't his only faux pas.
