There was a broad, almost universal, consensus in America that WWI, WWII, and the Korean War were great national crusades for liberty, justice, and peace. Reducing them to the level of partisan politics reinforced Dole's image as a hatchet-man. The unintended implication that Republicans would not have stood up to Hitler or tried to defend democracy in Korea didn't help either.
