Death or life in prison (where life means life)?

Depends on the conditions of both punishments.  In the west in 2019?  Life in prison, easy.

Depends on the conditions of both punishments.  In some countries in the west in 2019?  Life in prison, easy.

When I first saw the subject title, I was about to say the 'blood eagle'.  Tongue

Given the death penalty has become relatively more humane over the years and decades, I would say life in prison, especially American prisons.  If you're not already naturally big and strong enough to defend yourself to avoid becoming someone's unwilling 'wife', you're in for a rough time.

It really depends on which prison you go to and how old you are.  Regular men going to regular men prison don't get raped as much as media suggests it does.  Juviniles getting put in with adults do, juviniles get raped a lot in juvenile prisons too.  You might not want to go to jail for hurting kids either.

So, don't be a kid and don't hurt kids, and you'll probably not get raped in prison.

Life in prison is definitely the more severe punishment.

Let's remember that "life" usually means twenty years in the US (as far as I'm aware). With that in mind, the first five years or so might be an opportunity for self improvement: structured environment, access to books and workout equipment, possibly an education, maybe make some friends by joining a gang... After that though it'd probably take a toll. If you've already got a family, while it would be frustrating to watch them go on without you, you could at least have that to hang onto. Hell, at my age, going in means I still might have some time when I get out. But going in as a single guy in one's thirties for a twenty-year stint would be rough.
