Let's remember that "life" usually means twenty years in the US (as far as I'm aware). With that in mind, the first five years or so might be an opportunity for self improvement: structured environment, access to books and workout equipment, possibly an education, maybe make some friends by joining a gang... After that though it'd probably take a toll. If you've already got a family, while it would be frustrating to watch them go on without you, you could at least have that to hang onto. Hell, at my age, going in means I still might have some time when I get out. But going in as a single guy in one's thirties for a twenty-year stint would be rough.
