It should be changed but the design she is proposing looks awful.

It would look better if it used the Canadian proportions of 1:2:1 instead of 1:3:1 but it looks ugly to me. Of the various ideas I've seen for an improved Mississippi flag I like the one below best.

Simplifying the river border and the coastline would be better, and probably necessary to make the flag commercially produceable. I also wouldn't mind having either no central emblem or something other than the magnolia tree.

Never understood why the Mississippi flag contains the Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia anyways.

How surprising that conservatives want to leave it alone. Separatist symbols really don't belong on any state flags.

Removing the flag of traitors is not "rewriting history".

The real rewriting of history was The Lost Cause myth in which White Southerners propagated for almost 100 years because they lost the Civil War.

Um you are rewriting history by supporting that symbol being on official state grounds. It is the flag of the biggest traitors in the history of our nation, and a group of traitors who started a war that killed over 650,000 people just because they wanted to preserve slavery.

I'm glad Germany "rewrote history" and got rid of its WWII-era flag (or at least was forced to).  It's also good that South Africa no longer uses the same flag it used in the 1980s.

And why do you want to keep honoring treason and rebellion against the United States of America?

I feel this way. It's way too generic looking, nothing in the flag indicates to me this flag is meant to represent Mississippi. Just a few examples of states with good symbols on their flag include Texas with the lone star, Colorado with the stylized C, New Mexico with the Zia symbol, South Carolina with the Palmetto tree, Oklahoma with the battle shield of an Osage warrior, Alaska with the Big Dipper and Polaris, and Arizona with the setting sun with red and gold rays. Furthermore, many state flags simply have their state seals, which while boring and bland, at least clearly indicate which state the flag is for.

Personally, I'd try and incorporate the Magnolia into the flag somehow, since the state nickname is the "Magnolia State" and the Magnoilia is the state flower as well as tree.

Something like this?

Now if we could incorporate some green leaves in that Magnolia as well as the state's Latin motto, I can actually like this design.
