I guess I'll call this my Governorship Trilogy of threads. Now that he's eight years removed from public life, how would you, in retrospect, grade Arnold's time as California Governor? I honestly don't know much about his time in office from an objective standpoint.

All I know is he wanted to run in 2002 but didn't because he had to do Terminator 3, so he did a ballot initiative about a crappy after school program instead. Then when Davis went up in flames in 2003 he wasn't sure if he wanted to run (which already isn't a good sign of your job dedication) and decided to on a whim as he was walking out onto the Jay Leno stage. That's about it. I don't know much about his policies and such so I'm curious what people more in the know have to say.

A pretty solid B. A did pretty well with the enviornment, especially for a Republican, and is socially very moderate. The economy is a mixed bag, though most of the bad things happend were beyond his control. He failed the clean up the fiscal mess he inherited. Moonbeam did it.

I give him a solid A as actor Tongue

C for Average. Though I could give a D for the budget crisis, which he did not handle well, the overall economy which led to the decrease in taxes coming in for the budget because of the recession, isn't in the Governor's control. I'd likely give a B if the budget crisis and subsequent fallout, which was made worse by his obvious disinterest in the job towards the end, did not occur. Overall he did pretty well, pre-recession anyway, for a Republican in a blue state with a Democratic dominated legislature.

I'll give him that, his forceful campaigning for the redistricting commission and top-2 primary has changed California politics for the better and provides a shining example for other states to follow.

Other than that, though? He didn't accomplish sh*t. For all his branding as a Sane Moderate Republican (TM) Smiley Smiley Smiley (itself mostly a product of how much the party has drifted to the right since he left office), his negotiating strategy with the Democratic legislature was about as constructive as T***p's negotiating strategy with Congress today. He talked a big game and that's it. It's hard to remember but California at the time was the country's laughingstock. The turnaround when Brown came along was really impressive in retrospect (even though he didn't fix everything, far from it).

I'll be generous and go with D.

I was thinking about this today for no particular reason. I'll give him a c to a d. A lot of people remember that he spent much of the first half of his first term pushing a bunch of right-wing State ballot initiatives that all went down in flames. To his credit, he learned his lesson and sought to govern as a moderate from there on it. I guess it's not worth sneezing at that in the Democratic wave year of 2006 he was still handily reelected.

Well, he deserves credit for turning California into a one-party state.

Yea, Arnie is real moderate in the old school Rockefeller way. Not a fake moderate like Scott Taylor or Barbara Comstock.

C at best. He was good on some things like climate change and electoral reform, but not that great on many other things.

A big fat F. Arnold is a shining example of why you don’t elect someone because they’re not a politician. Meg Whitman would have been even worse if she’d won in 2010.
