There has not been a normal succession of 2 straight Democratic presidents since 1856 (James Buchanan succeeded Franklin Pierce as a result of the 1856 Presidential election).

By normal succession, I mean an electoral victory and not due to the death of the incumbent Democratic president. Truman became President after FDR's death in 1945 and LBJ became President in 1963 after JFK's assassination. Those were not electoral victories, even though both Truman and LBJ won the next Presidential elections.

If Hillary Clinton won in 2016, she would have been the first Democratic president to succeed another Democratic president originally due to an electoral victory and not due to the death of the previous Democratic president in 160 years.

This was just something I noticed.

How about Republicans pre-Reagan/Bush 1992?

Herbert Hoover was the last Republican president before Donald Trump that won on a Republican presidential/vice presidential ticket that didn't have Richard Nixon or a Bush.

This thread probably belongs in the History board, but still:

Between 1952 and 2004 (except 1964), every GOP ticket had either Nixon, Dole or a Bush on it.

In 1988, George HW Bush became only the fourth sitting VP in history (and the first in over 150 years) to be elected president (after Adams, Jefferson and Van Buren).

Jefferson is the only person to have ever served as VP (for any length of time) to go on to serve two full terms as president.
