Virginia is a swing state that has a ton of federal workers. Is the Trump shutdown enough to alienate them into voting for a Democrat?

No, because #bothsides are equally to blame, so evenly divided perennial swing state Virginia will appropriately blame #bothsides equally. Smiley

No, it already was out of reach.

Virginia voted for the winning presidential nominee 4/5 times since 2000. Prior to this event it was a pure tossup for 2020.

I think he has long since given up on it.  His focus should be on holding on to the states he won in the Midwest.

Can you really call Virginia crucial considering Trump lost it in 2016 but still won the electoral college?

I know you're trolling but I'd like everyone else to know that this question is a string of false premises and not worth responding to.

Michael Bennet, the presumptive Democratic nominee, is refusing to accept his salary for as long as the government is shut down. Virginia will be a lock for him for as long as he continues this wonderful display of courage.

I could see Michael Bennet proving to be a very strong GE candidate given that the shutdown + his courage in relating to the poor squabbles of federal workers will allow him to lockup Virginia against Trump. At that point with Colorado and Virginia locked up, Trump will be in huge trouble.

Seriously. I doubt the Trump campaign ever assumed they could win this state even before the shutdown occurred. Hell, his 2016 campaign already pulled out of Virginia several months before the election

No. It was already out of his reach before the shutdown. The shutdown is just tempting fate for him to lose by double-digits this time.

Virginia isn't crucial or a swing state. It will vote for the dem with our without the shutdown (except if the Democrats nominate someone really terrible)

Hillary Clinton’s insider credentials from having worked in DC so much likely helped her hold Virginia. If Dems nominate somebody who’s far left and not from DC like Richard Ojeda or Jason Kander then I could see Trump carrying it easily.

Well yes, I think it's further out of reach.  Still, I think it was pretty solidly Democratic beforehand.

The shutdown may just be enough to push Loudon County into the D column. It voted for Ed Gillespie in 2014, you know. But the relative lack of damage inflicted on armed services means that key areas like Newport News and VA Beach are likely to remain lean-R. Smiley

The real question is how the various Democratic candidates play the shutdown during the primary races. Virginia notably hates populist candidates like Bernie Sanders and Sherrod Brown - will solidarity with notoriously elitist federal workers (Hillary workers most likely to vote for T-Mac in the primaries) be enough to drag unpopular progressive candidates out of the gutter?? What's more, if one of these unpopular progressive candidates wins, will they be able to win Loudon County, or the whole state, against Trump despite massive anti-progressive corporatist-backed headwinds??

No, because #bothsides are equally to blame, so evenly divided perennial swing state Virginia will appropriately blame #bothsides equally. Smiley

Indeed, Democratic inability to stop the shut down means that Mark Warner is extra vulnerable in 2020, especially from a feisty left-leaning Perriello-type progressive hero challenger from southside and panhandle voters. Smiley

Does anyone really think voters in NOVA would prefer a racist/sexist/xenophobic candidate over a social democratic candidate? If so, please show me polls which support this idea.

It would take a ticket of Robert Mueller/James Comey (R) against Tulsi Gabbard/Dennis Kucinich (D) for Republicans to have a good shot at VA in this age.
